High Level of Interests in Boot Camp

Postby Antony » Wed 19 Apr, 2006 7:51 pm

Apple Exec: "We're seeing a high level of interest in Boot Camp"

According to The Mac Observer

Apple Computer executives told financial analysts Wednesday that the company has seen a "high level of interest" in Boot Camp following the release of a beta version of the software earlier in April. The company refused, however, to give specific download numbers, citing the fact that it was beta software intended to gain customer feedback.

...

"You know, the response has been written about a lot," said Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer. "We did this because we were getting a lot of customer requests for this, as many Windows users were considering switching to the Mac. We think that it makes the Mac even more appealing to them."

It's known that Apple will include Boot Camp in Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard," but it is not known what form that support will take. For instance, Apple could simply include the functionality inherent in the beta version of Boot Camp that would continue to allow users to choose Windows or Mac OS X. The company could also take it in a different direction, such as allowing Fast User Switching between the OSes or virtualization that allows both OSes to be run at the same time.

To people who think that Boot Camp will kill the Macintosh, this blog entry by Colin Cornaby might change your mind:

Apple introduces the Macintosh – Apple II users panic, declare end of Apple and the Mac
Apple switches to the IBM PowerPC – Anti-IBM Macintosh users panic, declare end of Apple and the Mac
Apple axes the Newton – Newton users panic, declare end of Apple and the Mac
Apple releases the iMac – Anti-colored computer, ADB and SCSI using users panic and declare end of Apple and the Mac
Apple announces OS X - Anti UNIX Apple users panic and declare end of Apple and the Mac (ok, so I was in this crowd…)
Apple announces switch to Intel processors – Anti Intel Mac users panic and declare end of Apple and the Mac
Apple releases Boot Camp – Anti Windows Macs users panic and declare end of Apple and the Mac

Number of times Apple or the Mac has died: 0

Want to play PC games?

You will be able to enjoy the best gaming experience when you play the game with Apple's excellent Intel-based Macs.

http://hem.sheab.net/~geefourman/ has videos showing Battlefield 2 and Doom 3 playing on a MacBook Pro 2.0 (2GB RAM, ATI X1600 256 MB, Boot Camp).

Doom 3 is not a very heavy game, plus it is available for Mac OS X.

Doom 3 is very heavy, for me at least.

Battlefield 2 can also be played smoothly on a MacBook Pro.

Apple underclocks the GPU in it's laptops, making it a lot slower than if it were to be running at the proper speeds as specified by Ati.

Mandrake, I believe most sources report the reason for underclocking GPU in Apple's laptops was the need to reduce the heat.

Yes, PowerBook and MacBook Pro are very warm at the base.

I can vouch for this. While idling, a MacBook Pro (in an Apple store) heated up to about the tempreature that my laptop does -- and let it be known that my laptop has a heating problem. If you ask me, though, the problem isn't so much because of the GPU: it could very well be the thin design of the MacBook line, which doesn't allow for a very big fan/heatsink. A Radeon X1600 without a good fan/heatsink isn't a good idea.

I can see a reason for the underclocking factor, though its effects aren't that noticeable. Halo PC running on a MacBook Pro will only skip once every so often, and that's most likely attributed with emulating the demo under Rosetta anyway. (Or, is there an Intel-native port by now?) Given, Halo isn't very intensive, even I can play it without it crashing.

Actually, they did it to reduce the noise, and therefore keep MacBook Pros as "extra quiet". If you download ATITool and set the GPU back to the recommended ATI speed, it will not overburn/overheat, but the fans will be more noisy.

Off topic, still. But to answer the underclock issue.

Mandrake wrote:Apple underclocks the GPU in it's laptops, making it a lot slower than if it were to be running at the proper speeds as specified by Ati.

According to a post in Whirlpool,
GazmanT wrote:The laptop itself doesn't give off as much heat as the 15", or rather it seems that because of the bigger case, it dissipates heat much better. And for the users who were interested in video card performance, and remembered that the 15" X1600 was actually underclocked quite considerably, will probably want to know that with the 17" it seems that they have fixed the gpu buses higher, to a more respectable speed, but still slightly underclocked, meaning if you have the guts you can overclock just a little bit more.

The MacBook Pro 17-inch is even more suitable for gaming on the road.

A bad news for those who can't live without the latest...

tuaw.com reported Windows Vista RC2 doesn't work on Macs via Boot Camp.
