Spoofstick for Firefox?

Postby humpd » Sun 09 Apr, 2006 10:22 pm

Does anyone use this: http://www.spoofstick.com/firefox.html with Firefox? Is it any good and is it really needed? I would think that it is like some of the anti phishing add-ons that are available. Just curious.

I used the Spoofstick, in the past. I guess that it is ok. But, it makes you think. When I first got it, I went more into the website, and it showed corestate.com? What?

I guess the next version of Firefox will have anti-phishing built-in.

Otherwise, learn to read URL address, and you will be fine most of the time.

The URL format is as following:
http://user:pass@url.com/

Many scam websites hide their URLs in following format....
http://www.paypal.com:randomstring@123.123.123.123/
Where they fake to be PayPal, and the actual URL is 123.123.123.123

I also have a bookmark in my Personal Toolbar, which I call URL Alert:
Code: Select all
javascript:alert(%22The real URL is: %22 + location.protocol + %22//%22 + location.hostname + %22/%22 + %22\nThe address URL is: %22 + location.href + %22\n%22 + %22If the server names do not match, this may be a spoof.%22);

Unfortunately, I can't copy the results of the alert, but it works.

It's not quite the same BUT Siteadvisor works well to inform you as to the reliability of the site. You can find it here: http://www.siteadvisor.com/

James,
I was intrigued by Site Advisor, and, I tried to get it into FF1.0.7. It did not indicate that it could not be used, and it appeared to be an extention.
I prefer to download .xpis, since they can be reused if anything goes wrong, or used in another browser of the similar kind, but right clicking on the install button did not give that option. So, I proceeded to click on Install, after agreeing with the rules and regulations. Since nothing happened, I clicked on the bar to allow the site. Nothing happened. So, I restarted FF. And, that's when the fun began. I was getting nothing that the toolbars, all buttons being locked. Having upgrade the the MediaPlayer Connectivity extention, I started the program in -safe-mode, to disable the extentions. And, I uninstalled the MediaPlayerConnectivity extention. I restarted regularly, and the home page showed up, but I got a cryptic alert., saying that (Roboform)Adapter 6.6.6 supports only Firefox1.0 to 1.0.7. You are using Firefox1.0.7. Please upgrade Roboform Adapter to the latest version or downgrade your browser.
Very interesting, since the statement makes no sense, and I had v.6.6.6 since it came out, but I uninstalled Roboform.
Then, reinstall MediaPlayerConnctivity and Roboform, one at a time, with the lower .xpi, which I, still had. Then, with each, I upgraded to the same version which I had before.
So, I am back to square one, but with no Site Advisor. And, nothing in either the Program, and the Profile.
Interesting experience, but I will give it another shot, but, not for a direct install.

I got it. I had failed to click Install, after allowing the site. But, it never showed up in the allowed sites, for Downloads, until I went through the entire routine. But, why all the other craziness? It must have been a coincidence. Antony may be pleased to know that We tested this site and didn't find any significant problems.
Thanks James. I hope that no one else had my interesting experience. SA looks good.

The usefulness of this little program really demonstrates itself when you do a search on Google. Try it and see what I mean. Glad you got it up and running. :)

James,
I have it seen it in action, and I think that whatever nonosense I went through (I am sure unrelated to SA) was worth coming back and try again.

It is really great, but I have run into two problems this morning with FF1.0.7, that the poor thing was in a state of shock when I installed SiteAdvisor, but everything is under control. Now, I am getting SiteAdvisor in FF1.5.0.1.
