NS 8.1 Font Scaling

Postby SiMahDan » Thu 27 Apr, 2006 12:17 am

NS 7.2 and Firefox both use Ctrl+ and Ctrl- to scale the screen font up or down. When the screen font reaches a certain size, it then goes bold. MS Internet Explorer is absolutely lame in this regard with limited font size.

NS 8.0 did not seem to have the capability at all! That and lack of email client support drove me to uninstall NS 8.0. Does anyone know if the NS 8.1 has reinstated the font scaling feature?

Please advise; my tired old eyes need those larger fonts. It's nice to be able to quickly increase the font size without having to change my Windows Screen Resolution Settings.

Font resizing via Ctrl+ and Ctrl- has actually worked in all versions of NS8.0....

.......However, view a page in IE mode and you can easily get caught out by IE's woefull font size handling....... use Firefox mode and things are vastly improved.....

To see the problem, view the BBC News Home Page in IE mode and hit Ctrl+ and see if you can spot the 20 words that change size.......

......Press Ctrl-Shift-E to toggle over to Firefox mode and press Ctrl+ and all the text on the screen is re-sized.......

So the moral here is preserve your eyesight, only use IE mode for sites that don't work in Firefox mode......

Goto Options --> Site Controls --> Site List Tab --> Master Settings
and ensure that Firefox is used as default for the 'I Trust these Sites' and 'I'm not sure' categories. Then just enable IE as and when your forced to use it.....

Note that in native IE there is no Font Size keyboard shortcut, however to keep the interface consistent in NS8, they have added these shortcuts to IE mode.

Thanks much for the info. Will reinstall NS8. but without the email client, I'll have to revert to Thunderbird or another client that supports IMAP mail servers.

There is no e-mail client in NS8.x. It is a browser only. You will need a mail client like Thunderbird for mail, unless it is a webmail account.

The change from NS7 to thunderbird is fairly painless, I finally made the move a few months after TB 1.0 was available and haven't regretted it, the familiar UI makes the transition even easier, but its much more of an improvement than 'revert' implies......

Now that TB 1.5.0.2 is out, I'd go for that, I stuck with 1.0x until it it was available.

As always, it's prudent to backup your TB profile, containing your e-mails just in case.
