ac power loss causes Firefox toolbar disappearance

Postby drstrust » Sun 23 Apr, 2006 4:50 pm

I experienced an a/c power loss (blip) while Firefox was running. After rebooting I no longer can see the url pane, search pane, or custom toolbar items (icons) etc. All I have showing is the "File Edit View Go Bookmarks Tools Help" line. I have the Navigation and Bookmark toolbar showing as to their usual space but they are blank (they "close" when I deselect them under "View>Toolbars"/a rt mouse clik). I wondered if anyone might have a suggestion as to steps to try to restore the missing things?

* I've tried rebooting since the problem started (several times)
* I've tried using the "Customize" toolbar option, but there are no icons in the option window
* I've tried using a different Theme (a couple different ones actually, including the default)

I'm running XP.
I run a fair number of extensions installed and several themes. I'm looking at uninstalling/reinstalling those next but wondered if someone knew something to try before going thru all that...? I'm wondering if there's something in either of the .js files or my profile itself that the crash scrambled?

thanks~

something in the profile is messed up, and more exactly either your Theme or Extentions, if any. I have not like to push my luck with Themes, but I have six or seven extentions, and invariably when I started in Safe Mode, everything worked ok. Of course, all Themes and Extentions are disabled.
Then, it is a matter of deciding which one has to go. This problem happened twice, and even with no obvious power glitch, and, I, always succeeded in getting my profiles back. If you go to All Programs|Mozilla Firefox|Safe Mode, and start that way.
I see that you are using probably a nightly, so if the problem is with that one, you can accomplish the same thing by selecting: Start|Run|browse to the firefox.exe location, and add to that "-safe-mode" with no quotation mark, and with a keyboard space before the first dash.
I have also edited, temporarily the Target line of the shortcut icon (right click|Properties|top line, and added the modifier (I remove it when I am done). I don't know if the problem is the same as mine, but in my case, I see the toolbars, but can't do anything with any button, and no page loads. All I can do is to X out. Interestingly, I am asked if I want to close my Tabs, which I could not see, at all.

just the suggestion- well, the reminder! -I needed~

I opened in Firefox's safe-mode and none of the missing/lost items were displayed, but, they were in the Customize window when I opened it (where they were not in the full mode since the power loss)! While still in the safe-mode, I first replaced all the tools I use. Then I closed Firefox and opened in normal mode, where everything was fine.
I've since reactivated the theme I was using and all items have remained!

thanx for the reminder and the tips (and the fast response!)

(Here akbash mumbled something about localstore.rdf.) Never mind. Glad to hear you've got it fixed.

I would have brought up what you mumbled about. But, I think that these programs want to test our patience.
