inbox messages diasappeared

Postby kaosgds » Mon 24 Apr, 2006 9:54 am

yesterday, when i opened thunderbird, a popup box came up with a message about installing an upgrade. i went ahead and clicked ok. later that day, when i turned the machine on a second time and opened thunderbird, all of the messages in only my main inbox (i have several email accounts) seem to have simply disappeared. everything else seems fine.

when i check the profile on the hard drive, it appears the folder/mail is still there, but it will not show up on the screen. in addition, whenever i start the program up, there is now a long period where it acts like it's downloading something, (the little progress bar at the bottom), but nothing visible shows up when it's done.

i have an up to date security program installed, and ran the anti-virus again even though it had barely been more than a day since the last complete scan and everything came up clean.

has this happened to anyone else? could the two incidents be related? any suggestions as to how i might get my messages back?

i'm on windows XP professional, with a pentium 4 processor.

thanks

I don't understand everything that you are saying, like what is the meaning of one Inbox and several e-mail accounts. Typically, if the problem refers to a single Inbox, of one account (because each account has its own Inbox), then it could be a case of corrupted header file, i.e. the Inbox.msf file which matches the Inbox (no extention). It doies not hurt to delete the Inbox.msf file, with TB closed. This problem was very frequent with earlier programs, and, I never ran into it with TB.
But to give more accurate info I must know, exactly, what you are seeing, or not. You are talking about the Inbox. What about the Sent mail? Is this happening for the entire mail/

yes, it is just one inbox. i check four email accounts through my thunderbird program, and every folder (sent mail, junk mail, trash, other folders) except for one inbox is fine.

when i was trying to figure it out earlier and tried restarting, it said it was creating a summary file or something like that, and afterwards the old messages were there again. then it said it was downloading like 50 new messages, but when it was done, none of them showed up in any folders.

if i delete the MSF file, do i need to recreate the profile? is there anything i can do to get the missing messages to show back up?

Just delete the .msf file. It will be rebuilt when the mail account is started again. You do not need to create a new profile. Do this with TB closed.

Maybe I get it, so four accounts should have four Inbox files, but only one is acting up, and that is in a folder that you know. Anyway, creating a new profile is the last resort. Make sure that you delete the .msf file with Thunderbird closed.

i deleted the MSF file for the folder that was causing problems. when i started thunderbird back up, everything seems to be back to normal. i've been emailing all day with no trouble.

I wish that all solutions would be so simple. Keep that in mind for the future, and, don't count on that it will work, but it is a good place to start.
