I'm upgrading my computer from Win98 to Win2KPro [standalone home computer, one user only -- me]. Installed a second hard drive (40 Gb). Set the system up for a multiboot, with 98 on the first drive, 2kPro on the second. Ultimate goal: transition to all 2kPro only. But there are lots of programs that will have to be reinstalled before that's a done deal(!).
One of the first moves I'd like to make is get NS7.2 to run under 2kPro. Right now it's running only under 98 (from the first drive). I run one browser only and use 7.2 for email too. I have used Netscape exclusively since back in its 3.x days.
My first try was to just manually create a shortcut (to the drive one installation) on the 2kPro desktop and try to run NS from there. Nothing happens. Cute desktop icon/no action. (No error messages, but no action either.) Obviously, 2kPro's registry must not know about that installation and chooses not to run it without that.
So OK, do I ...
1. pretend there's no NS's in the system and install a fresh copy on drive 2 under 2kPro? If so, how do I get all my customization over to the new version? ... and my email?
Or [subject line of this topic],
2. try to get 2kPro to recognize and run the existing copy on the first drive? 2kPro does run some other, less exotic programs off the first drive just as they are.
I hate spending all those hours recreating tons of preferences settings, transfering all my stored email by hand, etc. But I'm not any happier with tons of program bloat and wasted hard drive space either, if I decide to do some form of a reinstall over the existing program, just to be able to keep all those settings and such ... not to mention, past experience with reinstalling over the top always turns up unexpected, unwanted changes.
All help and advise gladly accepted.
Regards,
Norm
