Netscape won't get or send messages

Postby MarkSebba » Mon 22 May, 2006 7:44 am

I transferred my email from another computer and now can't get or send new messages.
This is what I did.
I copied the 'prefs.js' file from the old computer and put it in the xxx.slt folder of the new one.
I edited it to change the addresses of the .slt folder to the new one each time it occurred.
Started netscape mail and it had set up accounts exactly like the ones on the old computer.
Closed netscape mail and then imported all the files from the 'Mail' folder (subfolder of xxx.slt) to the new computer exactly as they were.

Now I can see and access all my mail messages and folders just as before, but can't get or send messages. Pressing the 'send' button appears to cause the message to be sent, and it goes into the 'sent' folder, but it never arrives. Pressing the 'get' button produces no response at all.

Probably I should have changed something else when I edited the pres.js file?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Create a new profile, set up your mail account as before and then just copy and paste your mail folder to the new profile. There is really not a reason to do all that you did. Had you just installed NS on the new computer, set up your mail as before, then all you would have to do is copy the mail folder from the old to the new as well as your bookmarks. By the way, always back up your profle before making any changes or copying folders just to be safe.

It should have worked if the entire old .slt folder had been copy/pasted. It is a pain to edit the prefs.js, and one is very sure if everything is done correctly. But, the test is to see if the accounts are listed in your Mail client.
Also from which Operating System (OS) to which OS did you do the copy/pasting. In other words, did you do it in the right place?
By the way, I have always used the approach listed by humpd.

Problem solved

Thank you both for your replies. Actually restarting the computer solved the problem though subsequently, there have been some problems with the prefs file becoming corrupt. Many thanks for the help.
