Digidesign has released an Intel processor native version of its Pro Tools application.

Digidesign Pro Tools LE 7.1.1 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1.1 software updates are now available

[img=left]http://sillydog.org/pix/MacOSX_Universal_45px.gif[/img]Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1.1 software are free updates that support Apple’s new Intel-based iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini computers. Both updates run natively on Intel-based Macs, making full use of the host computer’s processing power. These updates are only for Intel-based Macs.

Registered Pro Tools LE 7 owners and registered Pro Tools M-Powered owners (any version) can download the appropriate update at the Digidesign and M-Audio® websites or order an installer CD (for a nominal handling charge) from the online DigiStore.

The company also confirmed that it will continue to support Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered software on the PowerPC platform.

The status of Pro Tools has been one of my greatest questions about the success of the new Intel Mac systems. The majority of Pro Tools users are most likely running on the Mac platform, and some were also running with four 2.5GHz, 64-bit processors on one tower (namely the Power Mac G5 Quad system). Apple has now stepped back to the equivalent of two 32-bit processors, both running at a slower speed in the first place.

I'd be interested to see whether Pro Tools users end up sticking with the G5 line, wait for Apple to release a 64-bit Intel system, or consider other, faster, and 64-bit solutions from AMD or Intel.

If you read Mac rumour sites, they are predicting the upcoming update to Power Mac G5 (called "Mac Pro", rumour sites predicted) will likely to feature 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Of course, Apple may continue to release updates of Power Mac G5, just like they were still offering OS9-bootable Power Mac G4s for a very long period of time after the availability of Power Mac G5.

Single or dual Woodcrest dual core Xeon processors seem most likely for the Intel PowerMac. Intel is set to release them in late June, Apple would likely release the Intel PowerMac some time after that.
