Netscape/AOL web mail. help!

Postby RB2D2 » Sat 26 Aug, 2006 10:52 pm

I have successfully accessed my web mail on the web site (switched to AOL). HOWEVER, the accounts (two of them) no longer work in my Netscape Mail Client. Will I no longer be able to read my Web Mail in Netscape Mail Client?

If not that is a BIG blow! Especailly with one account, I use it a lot and I hate going to the web site to read the mail.

Please tell me I will still be about to read the mail in my Netscape Mail Client. Lie to me! LOL

You must have received notices that AOL was going to discontinue @netscape.net, and use accounts with the same username and password, but @aim.com.
I received, at least three of those notices. Since there is no more @netscape.net, it should be very simple to set up an account for AIM mail. The settings are very similar to those of Netscape Webmail. Assuming that "username" is your username, the new account should be set up, as username@aim.com; IMAP server:imap.aim.com, port 143 (will come up automatically if IMAP is selected);to send mail create a smtp.aim.com server, port 587, with username to be authenticated. And, you will have to select that smtp, in the account server settings, I believe, to send your mail.
I had create an AIM account long ago, with same username and password as netscape's, and, although I had not used my webmail account for nearly one month, I received some spam mail directed to my @netscape.net account, but @aim.com. So, you should be able to set up an aim.com account, and get your netscape webmail. You should also be checking the AIM site for your mail.

Yes, I have received notices. I found instructions much like yours for settings to use in 3rd party email clients. Can't make it work. Not in Netscape Mail Client.

I followed your instruction to a T and authentication can't be used.

I did try checking (and unchecking) "use secure connection". When I check for mail and enter my password it says "Sending login information" at the bottom but after a bit I get "Login to server imap.aim.com failed"

Although it shouldn't have anything to do with incoming mail just want you to know I DID add the smtp setting according to your instructions also.

Yes, when you set up the new account, if you do it right, and click on the Inbox ALL your old mail will download in the right folders! LOL, like magic, what a sight.

Mail sent to the old address with be directed to the same Inbox. You don't have to tell anyone to change anything.

It matters little how long you used your webmail. Things are changed.
To avoid future problems you should inform your contacts. For now, you @netscape.net mail will still be delivered at a newly created @aim.com account. Eventually, they will stop that. Since I knew that this would happen, many months ago, I have had very little to do, but whatever little mail which is sent to the old address gets to my new one. The only difference is that I don't have two separate accounts.
And, you cannot just change the settings of your Netscape mail. You must create a new account for aim.com. If you have an aol.com with the same username/password, it may go to aol.com, instead.
Basically, it is a way for AOL to say that they are not Netscape.

wozzar, have you gone to the web site and tried to access your mail account? You may have to do that first, there are some questions you have to answer first before you can access your account even on the Web since this change over took place. These are only two or three security questions and only the one time.

Hope that helps.

I have had no problem with my aim.com accounts, which use the same username and password as 2netscape.net.
In first place the server settings to receive mail do not need to be any more secure than any other account. The server is imap.aim.com which is automatically using port 143. The username is yourusername, and security settings are set on never.
To send, I am using my Thunderbird settings which are a bit different from Netscape's, but very user friendly. You want to go to your Outgoing servers, and Add a new server, if you have not done it. Same yourusername, server:smtp.aim.com.
In the security and authorization part make sure that there is a check mark next to:use username and password".
Use secure connection:No.
Netscape does not have this clearcut choice, and you will have to got to your Advanced server settings under the specific account to select that you want to use the AIM smtp.
So, don't do any more than necessary. All you need to do is to authenticate the sender. You are, automatically, authenticating the incoming mail. The only difference is that you will be asked for the username and password, twice. One to receive, and one to send.
