QuickTime 7.1 won't install with MS06-015, workaround

Postby Antony » Mon 10 Jul, 2006 8:53 am

There are reports that QuickTime 7.1 won't install correctly on Windows if MS06-015 - Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution is installed.

According to Apple Discussion, removing MS06-015 allows Quicktime 7.1 to be installed.

To install QuickTime, there are ways:
Removing MS06-015 (KB908531) made it possible to install QuickTime 7.1, which in turn fixed iTunes.

OR
use QuickTime 7.0.4 (*) to work with Windows XP/Server 2003 x64 version.

(*) Yes, it's fine not to use the latest version of the software. We are well aware a huge number of open-source extremists cannot live without latest version of software of patches they can get hold of.

I thought I had tried every version of QuickTime 7.x on x64, but I guess I had not. This one works great. Thanks :D iTunes works too!!! w00t! WinAmp has once more been banished to my recyle bin for all eternity!

To get iTunes working I simply installed Quicktime 7.04 from the link above, then installed iTunes 6.0 and everything just works great. It might not be the latest version, but it's fine for me. (later iTunes versions might work, but I doubt 6.05 will - since it needs Quicktime 7.1)

Mandrake,

Glad to know QuickTime 7 worked for you on your Windows 64-bit. :-)

Unfortunately this isn't working for me

Postby bndo » Wed 19 Jul, 2006 11:10 am

I don't want to uninstall the MS update.

I'm running windows server 2003.

I tried to install QT 7.1, but encountered an issue. So I went into Add/Remove and uninstalled it.

I then found the download for 7.04 and tried to install it, but get a message

However, I can't uninstall any QuickTime program... and now I can't install one either!

Any suggestions?

Can you uninstall QuickTime 7.1 from Control Panel?

unfortunately no.

I don't see any QuickTime program in control panel (no apple or iTunes either).

However on restart, I did see the blue Q in my sys tray. Double clicking on that (or the exe here [tt]C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe[/tt]) didn't open the player, but it did briefly show the [tt]QuickTimePlayer.exe[/tt] in my active processes. It disappears from processes in about 2 seconds.

That's doubtful. I had all sorts of problems installing an removing QuickTime until I tried the method mentioned above. Now that it works I'm leaving it as-is until Apple releases a version of Quicktime/iTunes that officially supports x64.The best thing I can reccomend is manually uninstalling it. That is, removing the [tt]Program Files (x86)\Quicktime[/tt] folder (just move it, don't delete it incase something goes wrong). Then backup the registry and within regedit delete the following: [tt]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WoW6432Node\Apple Computer, Inc.[/tt]

I'll give that a shot, Mandrake.

For the record my apple reg is here
[tt]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.[/tt]

awesome. Thank you so much.

I uninstalled using the move, backup reg, and then install the 7.0.4 version.

Now I'm live.

Again, thank you.

I've discovered one thing that doesn't work in iTunes under Windows XP x64: CD Burning. This is due to the fact that iTunes is only bundled with a 32bit version of the necessary driver. To restore CD burning capabilities in iTunes under XP x64 you need to install the 64bit driver from GEAR Software.

I tried everything here too and it still wouldn't let me install a new QT. Finally I did a search and found another folder in the Windows folder SysWOW64 that contained a Quicktime folder (and some files). I deleted this folder and the QT files and then it installed fine.

Good Luck,
Dave

itunes and xp 64 bit

Postby cappsb » Mon 09 Oct, 2006 8:01 pm

I have tried everything I could think of the upgrade to the next level of iTunes, but everytime I try to install iTunes the install stall at the point where it is "registering modules". My CPU usage goes to 100%.

I have tried to install quicktime by itself and then install iTunes, no go same problem.
I have tried all the tips I've read here and again no go.
I have even been to level II support from Apple for nearly 1.5 hours again no go.

I really need help.
