Administrator Privileges for 7.0?? On a home pc

Postby kcjenkins » Wed 15 Jan, 2003 12:50 am

Now I'm completely confused. The only thing on the computer is Netscape 4.72 (I removed 6.0 before I started this). I try to install Netscape 7.0 from a CD, and it stops and announces, "Setup has detected that you do not have the appropriate Administrator privileges to this system. It is highly recommended that you do not continue with the installation of Netscape 7.0, or it may not function properly. Would you still like to continue?"

It's a home computer. There is no administrator, and I never set anything called "Administrator privileges." And best of all, if I'm reading all this right, Netscape wants to charge me $29 for the support call I'd need to even make the product work!!

Does anybody have any suggestions, other than paying Netscape $29 for the magic word?

Administrator privileges may be needed if you are using Win NT, 2000, or Windows XP. It just means that you need the rights to modify certain files. I have not needed that for Netscape on my Win 2000 machine so my computer people must have given my user account sufficient rights to change settings. If you have any of the OSs listed above, then you must give your user account the proper rights or you must log in as administrator.

If you are using Win 9X, then that warning should be incorrect. You should be able to continue and install Netscape 7.01.

Other people on this forum may be able to help you more than I. Post back if you have more info to give.

This advice should be taken with the proper medications in order to achieve the best effect. :)

Still no luck installing 7.01

Postby kcjenkins » Sat 18 Jan, 2003 9:53 pm

As best I can tell, there are no administrator rights at all on this computer. It's not connected to a network -- it's a home computer. There is no remote administration tab in the control panel, and under the control panel "password properties", under "user profiles," it has checked "all users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings." There are also no personalized logons in Windows, since it's not on a network. Meanwhile, Netscape 7.01 is still refusing to load, giving me the same message about not being the administrator, and the older browser -- Navigator 4.72 -- has become seriously unstable since I starting trying to get 7.01 to load. I never thought I'd say this, but Netscape is in danger of driving me to Internet Explorer at last . . .

Everyone is entitled to use the browser of their choosing. If you choose to use Internet Explorer, so be it.

What is your OS? Windows 2000 and XP will have User privileges issues.

Failing to install NS 7.01 should never interfere with NS 4.x.

Have you tried downloading a SillyDog version of NS and trying that version instead of the CD? The SillyDog versions are not that large.

Good Luck, in any case.
