iTunes 7, movie downloads, and "iTV"

Postby Don_HH2K » Tue 12 Sep, 2006 4:04 pm

CNNMoney wrote:Under the new movie service, consumers will be able to choose from over 75 movies from Miramax and Walt Disney Co. (Charts) studios - Disney, Pixar and Touchstone - to download from the company's popular iTunes store.

New releases will cost $12.99 when pre-ordered and during their first week of availability and $14.99 after that, Apple said. Older films titles will be $9.99.

The movies will include "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "Shakespeare in Love" and "The Incredibles", the company said.

Consumers will be able to download the films to watch on their computers and iPods.

Apple also said users will soon be able to watch the movies on TV with the upcoming release of a new product dubbed the iTV player, according to the company.

The new functionality is apparently built into the recently released iTunes 7. New features, according to Apple's website, include new layouts for music including album view and "Cover View", as well as an 'iPod Games" service featuring a few classics like Tetris, Pac-Man, and so on, that can be downloaded to a fifth-generation iPod. Video downloads are now 640x480, four times the size of previous videos, and now includes on-screen movie controls. It's now also possible to quickly view what's taking up how much space on your iPod, what's downloading, and use parental controls. The full new feature list is available on the iTunes overview page.

DJGM, you haven't bought any iTunes music from iTunes Music Store through SillyDog701's iTunes link (link to iTunes Music Store)? I am sure Antony is disappointed ;-)

iTV is project’s internal code name and will not be the final product name.

I've not bought anything from the iTunes Store for a while. Do the SD701 iTunes links go to the UK store or the US store?

If they go to the UK store, I can buy songs from there. But, if they go to the US store, then unfortunately I cannot.

Yes, there's a link for iTunes UK Store, available from SillyDog701 Message Centre's front door:

That just for the "Free Downloads of The Week" isn't it? TBH, I've not seen any artists on there I'm particularly keen on.

Once you clicked that, it will do for entire session. I will see if I can add a link to iTunes UK Store (front door).

On a not entirely unrelated subject, are there any SD701 links to the Apple Store UK yet? I quite like the look
of those colourful new iPod nanos, and I may well get a blue 4GB one for myself sometime later this year.

Side-by-side comparison of iTunes 6 and 7...

Image

Among the changes, the Browse button was moved to the bottom, and the overall application has a darker look. Also, iTunes 7 doesn't use the standard Aqua controls, opting instead for a somewhat different look. (Specially notable with the scrollbars)

So now even Apple themselves have stopped following their own beloved Human Interface Guidelines?

As far as I know, Apple's HIG doesn't demand the use of standard controls.

Couldn't wait to write that? hrrr.

You should've read Apple Human Interface Guidelines first.

What does this excerpt from the HIG mean, then?

Apple HIG wrote:Adopt standard Mac OS X user-interface elements, such as controls, menus, and dialogs. Do not implement your own custom controls or dialogs to replace those provided by the system.

I could be wrong, but maybe those new look scrollbars, and any other GUI elements that don't appear to comply with the
current Apple HIGs, are a sign of things to come in the upcoming Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Perhaps a totally refreshed
and updated GUI could be one of the still TOP SECRET elements Apple didn't want to reveal at WWDC2006 . . .

It means don't design the skin completely like Real Player.
