Here is the story in short:
Hot Fix KB912812, around Marc, April, this year, had an error in it which caused mshtml.dll to not work. KB 912945 fixes the fix.
End of story.
I had this problem in Beta 2, Beta3 and RC, on BOTH computers. Somehow, the one computer got fixed. But 912945 does not show up in History in Add/Remove. So, apparently that computer got it, while the other did not. Two computers in different locations and I do updates manually, so I do not always make the same decision.
So, one got p12945, the other did not.
I searched with Google on mshtml.dll with iexplore.exe. The got me started but not all the way there. It got me to b looking at KB912812.
The I searched on IE6.0.2900.2180, the "bad" build, with 6.0.2900.2873, the "good" build. That is what took me to KB912945, which did the trick.
The fix disabled an ActiveX control which had been screwed up by MSFT in KB912812
