After Netscape email worked well for years I'm stuck on inbox and the column on the left diappeared, leaving me with no means to get out of the inbox mode.
Has anybody experienced this phenomenon before?

Move your cursor to the left margin; it should become a double-ended arrow <-->. Drag it to the right.

Thanks Paul D in California. Now, why couldn't I have come up with that myself.

In addition, if you position your cursor (i.e. mouse pointer) over the 'handle' in the centre of the vertical divider, it should change to a pointing finger. Clicking on that will, if it's open, close the left-hand column, if it's closed, it will open the left hand column.

All the above also applies to the horizontal divider in mail and the vertical divider in the browser.
