QuickTime Plugin problem...

Postby Rockchik » Thu 03 Mar, 2005 11:40 pm

Hello,
I've been trying to 'play' mp3 sort of things online (like sampling ringtones on Cingular site) and I get the 'missing plugin' thing.
I have the latest FULL (enormous) version of quicktime installed (grrr...) since you cant just download the SIMPLE plugin anymore and I even followed their instructions to move the files from the plugin folder to netscape's plugin folder. Still nothing.
I'm pretty sure Java invokes this stuff and I have all the checkmarks (in preferences) on for java stuff. When I do a 'list' of plugins, none of mine seem to show up either. They are in the plugins file.
any suggestions?
oh yea, would it happen to have anything to do with the application/octet-stream thing? I deleted it a while back hoping to solve a previous problem. If I need this thing, please supply me all the things I need to fill in to add it back in like mime type, etc.
thanx in advance!

Hello Kat,

When you typed [tt]about:plugins[/tt] in the location bar, do you see QuickTime plug-ins there? and are they enabled?

And in Windows' "Set Program Access and Defaults" do you have QuickTime enabled?

Otherwise, you might want to try QuickTime Alternative (although I don't really recommend it)

One reminder, if Quicktime is installed before Netscape, and the incorrect .dll files were installed or copy/pasted things may not work. Also the embedded files may not behave in an expected fashion, unless you know the exact format. I checked the Cingular website, and the preview of a few others, and I looked at the source code, and the only thing I can tell for sure is that it mentions Windows Media player. I could not find anything about an mp3 format, but it could be a windows media player format. And, Quicktime is not know to be a player for WMP. I might be wrong, and, defer to antony's knowledge on this matter. Needless to say, the previews work for me.

I think installing the new quiktime messed everything up.
you are right, I dont think quiktime ever played back audio stuff before. I have realplayer enabled (I see in plugins) for that. (I got the 'mp3' file type by right clicking on the link and looking at the link's properties at cingular).
I forgot about the about:plugins thing. thankx.
Yes, quiktime is enabled in windows and works just fine standalone. It is also showing up all enabled in my plugins altho not in reference to any audio files.
The original problem I had that didnt work with quiktime (the version I had) was on a website fallingawake.com. on the homepage they have these audio?video? files and I thought my version was just old or something so I downloaded the latest.
whoa...just chekked the quicktime preferences for the browzer plugin and I do not have ANY mime types checked so not sure why it is being invoked at all. especially for mp3.argh! I'm going to bed. my head mega hertz.

Try enabling the Quicktime preferences > Browser Plugin > Mime settings to enable the MPEG audio and Mp3 filetypes and any other filetypes you want to enable in Quicktime (click the + to expand the categories if they are collapsed). Then try the Embedded MP3 Test link on my sound test page:

If you don't like Quicktime for midi or mp3 files, then try Crescendo. I posted the following in a [sdp=42826]previous sillydog.org forum thread[/sdp]
I use Crescendo for embedded midi. Each time I add a new version of Mozilla or Netscape, I copy these Crescendo files to the new program's Plugins folder:
CresObserver.class
CresPlayer.class
npmidi32.dll
I don't use Crescendo for embedded MP3 but if you do, also copy over:
npmp332.dll

You could also reinstall Crescendo and point it to the new Mozilla or Netscape plugins folder.

Thanks for pointing out. But what does "Windows Media Player Plugin" do to help QuickTime plugin?
