Hello all,

I upgraded from Netscape 4.7 and installed Netscape 6.2.3 on a Mac Powerbook running OS 9.1 today and everything seems to be working fine with one annoying exception. Whenever, I start Netscape 6.2 an alert window appears stating "Activation.netscape.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again."

If I click ok and close the box Netscape starts. Unfortunately, I was not prompted to activate Netscape during the installation process. I tried reinstalling, but I was still not prompted to activate Netscape.

This means that I cannot follow the instructions that are given in the Netscape 6.2-6.2.3 Release Notes. They state, "To prevent the Activation window from appearing whenever you start Netscape 6.2, press the Cancel button (and press Cancel in the confirmation dialog). The window will continue to reappear if you close the window using a method defined by the operating system."

I have tried searching for a file named activation.dll so that I could delete it as recommended in a previous post. However, it does not exist on my machine. Perhaps, it is a PC file that does not apply to Macs.

Any suggestions that you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I am thoroughly frustrated after spending most of the day trying to find a way to solve this glitch.

If no one else comes up try the Mac netscape newsgroup.
secnews.netscape.com. Apparently the Netscape6 newsgroup is dead, but there is a netscape.macintosh, although it may not help much. I cannot tell if there is a monitor. Just a bunch of people with problems.
In PCs there is an activation.dll file in the Component folder, which can be deleted.

Your problem isn't with your Mac. I've put it on two XP's in the last 3 weeks and have the same problem. Did you ever find a solution?

When you use Netscape 6 or 7 for the first time after installing it an activation screen comes up that requires that you supply Netscape with information in order to register/activate your copy of their browser.

This is an inconvenience if you are reinstalling the browser and don't want to have to activate it again. Don't worry, there is a simple change that you can make to one of the installed files that will make the activation screen disappear and enable you to use the program without having to re-register it.

From the folder where you installed Netscape go into the defaults sub-folder and from there into the pref sub-folder. Here you will find a file called all-ns.js which you will need to open in a text editor. (You may need to hold down the ctrl key and right click the file and select open with... from the menu in order to be able to open it with a text editor rather than trying to execute the contents).

In this file you will find a line that reads as follows:
pref("browser.registration.enable", true);

All that you need to do is to change true to false on this line and save the file and the activation screen will never bother you again.

Hi,
Yesterday, I had a problem after installing Netscape 6.2 FR on a G4 with Mac OS 9.2.2 FR. The Activation window could not find the Netscape Web page and was giving me a message that was poping-up each time Netscape 6.1 opened.
I just did what Dezz explains and it solved my problem.
I edited the file 'all-ns.js' with 'SimpleText'.
So thank you for your help.

I have the same problem with the activation window. I tried changing that line in the all-ns.js file, but it didn't work for me. The wrinkle that I have is that I have 3 different profiles. I had to delete one of the profiles and remake it - and now, for that profile only, the activation window screen pops up. Any ideas on what needs to be done here?

The activation had a reason to exist when AOL was sort of using as a vote to keep working on Netscape. There is no reason, any more.

If it made Netscape releases any faster in coming out, I would definitely register/activate. You never know, it could make AOL rethink their ways.

AOL does not have anyone left of the Netscape group. I have no idea who is doing the work now, but there is no expert. But, they can afford to take someone off a project to bring back Netscape. May be they forgot that there was a Netscape to release! Scary, but not inplausible thought.

You can abandon the webmail account setup with it.
Netscape aol needs them in order to keep making the nice browser.

Actually with Netscape 7.x, the registration (activation) window won't "persistent" at all. Once you click cancel, it won't be there next time you launch Netscape 7.x

Hello gang.

I KNOW this is an old, old post, but I thought I'd add my limited experience just in case someone comes along later looking for an answer.

I run Mac G3, OS 8.6, and had the usual trouble with the Activation business.

To get rid of it, all I did was move the "Activation.shlb" file from the Components folder to another folder (i.e. away from the Netscape folder area), rather than completely deleting it, rebooted Netscape, and problem solved.
