Life is tough being a black in the States

Postby Antony » Mon 27 Nov, 2006 11:29 pm

Well, we all know that racism although isn't allowed in the US, it still does exist. There are some recent true stories.

After Hurricane Katrina, Robert Davis, a black retired elementary school teacher returned to New Orleans to inspect his properties was beaten by white Police officers. Robert Davis was lucky that the scene was filmed by The Associated Press. Those people who filmed the incident was also threatened by police officers. reference

In February 1999, a 23 year old unarmed African immigrant Amadou Diallo was shot dead in a hail by New York Police with 41 bullets. The officers were charged with second-degree murder and reckless endangerment first, but later all charged were acquitted (i.e. not guilty).

Few days ago, another African-American was shot dead by the New York Police again. Sean Bell, a groom to be, was killed after a bachelor party, two of this friends were also wounded by the police. 50-odd shots were fired. (store: New York Times, CNN)

Life is tough being black in the states...

Postby Raj Luvs Linux » Mon 01 Jan, 2007 4:53 pm

I live in the states, Antony, have lived in 2 tough cities (New York and Chicago), and sad-to-say, racism and hatred are still a part of some folks' mentalities. Which really sucks... back in the 1960's, people were starting to come together and hold intelligent dialogues. Guess the government realized that wasn't gonna be good for status-quo, so they started fanning the flames of racism again. I do think, however, that there are more good people who AREN'T racists in America; it's just that the newspapers focus on the bad guys. In truth... black, white, red, yellow...Aboriginal..Hindu.. -- we're all children of the same God. Let's not let the few "bad apples" set the state of mind for the rest of us.
Check out the movie, "What The Bleep Do We Know?" for clues on how to do that if you like. The movie really gets one to think about... well...
what the **%$ DO We Know?"

Apparently, the situation is similar in Australia, blacks (Aboriginals) were being treated unfairly.

I don't think that's true at all. They are given the same benefits and rights as every other Australian citizen. They can even apply for subsidies on education for their children or themselves through AbStudy.

Same here in the U.S. A black person can enjoy all of the rights given to any U.S. citizen, and there are a couple of programs similar to AbStudy around here.

It's worth mentioning, to Antony in particular, that the governor of Massachusetts is black.

The law appears to be the same (and there are government assistances giving to Aboriginals).) However, in real life, it isn't always the same case.

Most non-black (non-Aboriginals) would prefer not to talk to Aboriginals. Sydney's Aboriginals community is being interviewed frequently by police for something ridiculous... any crimes.
If there's a crime and police does not have enough evidence on who conducted it, Police would talk to Aboriginals leaders to see if they know who did it. Although Police simply *seeks* information, it is clear police has something called profiling, and in plain words, Aboriginals were being treated as potential criminals.

One sad news about a white police officer (PC Anthony Mulhall) brutally punching a young black mother-of-one (Toni Comer, 20) in South Yorkshire (UK).
It is outraged to know that South Yorkshire's Chief Constable, Meredydd Hughes, decided to protect white police officer's wallet by keeping Mulhall in police force.

Mr Hughes said, "The officer draws a salary from the public purse and we will make use of his expertise and talent.

"But I don't want him put in a position where his welfare will be put at risk because he'll be dealing with the public. And also I want public confidence restored."

Whte PC Anthony Mulhall claimed that she tried to grab his genitals, however the CCTV footage suggests it was unlikely.

You can read more at BBC News, Daily Star, and The Star (CCTV footage).

Ah, now living in the UK I have heard about this story recently...

To be honest, I don't think the crime was racially motivated and I don't think he caused her any long-term injuries. Indeed, didn't the women herself say she did not even remember the incident until she was shown the CCTV footage? Then there's the whole thing about her saying she has epilepsy (she claims she was having a seizure/fit at the time of the incident), which she says she diagnosed herself! And wasn't she attempting to commit some crime anyway at the time of the incident?

It worth noting that I am myself an ethnic minority that was born in the UK. I have experienced racism before, but it is certainly not a daily part of my life! We do still have problems that need to be sorted out and I think tensions may be starting the rise a bit again, but I don't think the situation is that bad overall,. Then again I have only ever lived in the South of the UK, I've heard some people say that the situation in North is worse. I'm not really sure what that situation in the USA or Australia is like though...

In the first post of this thread, I mentioned...

Today's good news, three police officers were charges.

CNN wrote:The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has been acting as a spokesman for the families of the shooting victims, called the indictments an important step against police violence, according to AP.

Charges send bad message to police, union president says
What? They only worried about racist Police who abused the fire weapons and betrayed public's trust? They don't care about the justice of the blacks? The unarmed black groom died in hail of 50 bullets on the morning he was to be wedded.

Shame on the union president.

In January 2008, Anthony Warren, a black driver lie unconsciously on the ground after being chased by police was bashed brutally by mostly white police officers in Alabama. Five of those police officers used excessive force are white.
Warren received 20 years in jail, so far, those police officers involved were only fired, no charges.
Police also tried to cover up their act.
