NTFS external drive for Apple? - Robert Maloney

Postby robertmaloney » Wed 13 Dec, 2006 5:55 am

Hi, My name is Robert Maloney and I use a Dell Latitude. I am thinking on switching to MacBook Pro15". I have an external LaCie d2 Extreme 250Gb HDD wich is formatted NTFS.
Does Apple "see" NTFS?(as far as I know it only uses FAT32). Then how can I transfer the content of the external haddrive then if it doesn't? Robert Maloney
Thanks in advance!

Hello Robert,

Welcome to SillyDgo701.

Yes, Mac OS X recognises (i.e. can see) NTFS as well as FAT32.

However, Mac OS X can only read NTFS formatted HDD, for compatibility between Windows and Mac OS X, you should format it with FAT32 file system format (read and write).

As for myself, I formatted my external HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) since I don't plan to connect it to a Windows PC.

For more information on Windows compatibility please refer to http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/windows/ .
