Hi all,

I posted earlier that I kept getting a NS crash error: npswf32.dll has caused a problem and has to close.

As I have waaaaay too much time on my hands I tried a host of uninstalls and reinstalls; cutting, etc., all to no avail.

Then I noticed that the npswf32.dll was version 9 something.

I scrounged around and found the same file ( a little smaller) dated 1-02-06 (version 8.0.24.0) on another computer, did a copy and paste to the NS plugins folder (replacing the latest one) and I was able to do everything! NO CRASHES!!!

To see if I had both oars in the water, I did the same thing in reverse: Copied the "newer" version (version 9 something) into the plugins folder.

Guess what!?! Crashing all over the place!!! Again!

So, I replaced the "new" with the "old" (again) and — NO CRASHES!

So, if you can find an older version of npswf32.dll, try what I did. Although to be safe, copy the .dll you have now to the desktop for backup.

I don't know if this will work for others, but I'd appreciate it if you let me\us know if it worked.

I had heard that v.9 was the cause of the crashes, but you are the first who has shown, conclusively, I think, that it was the case. Unfortunately, although I have a good dozen of browsers of all types, all of them took up v.9 .dll, and the only Flash Installer is for v.9.
Except for a v.8 .dll in my uninstalled Mozilla folder.

Downloads for Version 9 and earlier, are found in Zip files on the Adobe Archive site . These files are unsupported, and supposedly for developers only. However, they are the real deal.

Looks like Flash Player 9 maybe incompatible with Netscape 7.2. There is a problem with dropping back to v8.0.24,
as there are multiple security vulnerabilities with the pre 9.x versions of Flash Player. That's aside from the
fact that there are also a lot of security vuln in Netscape 7.2, which was built upon Mozilla Suite 1.7.2

According to this list on mozilla.org, Mozilla Suite 1.7.5 - 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey 1.0 - 1.0.7, 139 security holes
have been patched. The list doesn't include Mozilla versions 1.7.4, 1.7.3 or 1.7.2, so I think we can safely say
that Netscape 7.2 contains well over 139 security holes. Since it's extremely unlikely that there'll ever be
anymore Netscape internet suites, upgrading to SeaMonkey 1.0.7 is strongly recommended.

(Anyone still using the last Mozilla Suite (v1.7.13) before it was officially discontinued by mozilla.org should also
consider upgrading to SeaMonkey as well, since more than 70 security holes have been patched since then.)

I figure if the user is going to continue using Netscape 7.2, the vulnerabilities in the browser are no less critical than the SWF V 8 vulnerabilities...

Hi all,

Am I being naïve in my assumption that having real-time Antispyware, Antivirus and Firewall programs running will catch the security vulnerabilities *before* something happens?

I just replaced my current npswf32.dll (file date 9 Nov 06) with an older version (file date 1 Sept 05) and like NO MORE CRASHES with NS 7.2! Thanks a great deal

Hi michaelgan,

Glad to be of help and thanks for letting us know it worked for you, too. I've been moseying around and it seems there are a *lot* of people with the newer FP version incompatibilities.

Ramona's suggestion to use version 8 with the link to get it is spot on!

As an aside, on another computer I'm using SeaMonkey and it works quite well. And, as more and more MBA's are looking to justify their salaries, there's going to be quite a few changes to website construction using the "latest" whatever in the future that will requre downloads of different goodies to view their site which, no doubt, will be incompatible with NS.
