iMac Intel / internet connection problems

Postby allen-uk » Sun 18 Feb, 2007 9:01 am

Hello all.

Running (or rather not running) iMac 2.0g Intel etc., new last week, OS 10.4.2.

Almost impossible to connect to the internet (only happened once, and never again).

Apple Support tried every possible combination and have now condemned the iMac as having duff hardware, a rare occurence. They're sending out a replacement in a day or two.

But in the meantime I thought I'd ask whether anyone else has had any problems at all connecting an iMac directly (ethernet) to a broadband cable modem. I know it SHOULD be just pressing a few buttons, but so far Apple and me have spent many tedious hours on the phone....

Does your broadband cable modem store login and DNS settings?

Or (in your previous G3), you will need to set up the DNS settings in your Mac?

Can the Mac see the cable modem at all? Also, do you mind telling us which ISP you are with?

Hello Antony.

ntl (lately taken over by Virgin in the UK).

I've been with ntl for years, and haven't experienced any problems with them or the kit.

I think it must store the settings, because I've never had to put any in. (DHCP is what you set the server to (but only if you've turned the power off, or otherwise disturbed the settings), and then the various IP addresses come down the cable to the modem/Mac).

Normally it goes for months and months without any problems, or any interventions on my part.

Which brand and model is your modem?

Solved.

Solution was to add a Belkin 4-way Router to the system, which has fooled the modem/ISP that my iMac isn't an alien being.

So: NOTHING wrong with the first iMac that Apple took back.

NOTHING wrong with the second iMac that they supplied without question.

EVERYTHING wrong with ntl/Virgin's customer support. They swore blind that there was no way the problem could be MODEM or CABLE or their mainframe computer, because my G3 was working okay.

Somehow, either at the modem or more likely at their end, the system just wouldn't accept an additional MAC address (that's MAC, not Mac), and the only fix was to buy a 40-quid modem (got it for less, used from Amazon), plug it in to the system, thus pretending to the ntl mainframe etc. that all my computers (both actually) have the same MAC address.

Weeks of frustration, time wasted, money down the drain at Apple, etc., etc., so anyone from VIRGIN / NTL please NOTE and tell your bone-headed service centre people that if the problem occurs again, this is what happened!
