8.1.2 problems being addressed

Postby Fulvio » Sun 18 Feb, 2007 9:28 pm

This what I got from Jay Garcia, when I said that they are reacting too slowly:
I filed the bug, it was acknowledged by Mercurial Communications the developer of NS 8 and is being worked on .. all over this weekend.

We will see.

If you don't fancy the wait, here's a fix.

To install:-
  • Exit NS8
  • Backup the original NS8 browser.jar in your:
    c:\program files\Netscape\Netscape Browser\chrome folder
  • Download the one attached here to this folder.
  • Rename this new one to browser.jar
If you have any problems, just put the original one back.

Antony, feel free to post it over here, it contains the previous fixes. As before, all changes are commented, search on my id to find them.

fwiw, NS8 seems to start much faster without this 'call home' code being invoked, so this fix probably has use even when the current problem is officially fixed ....

I will try it. For anyone else who is not used to sites like the one where it is available. You have scroll down to the bottom of the page, where a red arrow is going crazy. Right click|save
I am used to these file sharing sites which don't make things easy.

Oh yes, NS8.1.2 did not start.

OK, you can now get it from here It's finally appeared.....

Did it start OK before applying the fix...? It's working for me, and so far they're not a report of it failing over on the NS boards.

Do you get any error msg...? Not sure what to suggest other than to check you're using 8.1.2, it won't work with any other version....

I had uninstalled NS8.1.2, but will reinstall it again. Lately, it loaded the Home Page, and, immediately locked up. With the new .jar file, it did not open at all.
I did the following: 1.Download the .jar file
2. I renamed the existing browser.jar file, xbrowser.jar
3. I dragged and dropped the fix file, and then renamed it.
4.I tried to start NS8.1.2.
I reinstalled 8.1.2, and it opened fine both Tabs. Then I went to this newsgroup, and noticed that it had blank spaces where the username/password should be (I was using the same profile, but 8.1.2 is very clueless. I was able to enter the username, and half the password. And, it locked up.
Now, I tried the fix, and, man did it load fast. I got my username/password in. Opened one post, and tried to reply to that post. And, it locked up. My 8.1.2, at least, is hopeless.

It seems that the 'send home' code really slowed down NS8 startup and made it fairly unreliabel at startup, you could easily get the lockup symptoms you describe, unless you leave the mouse alone until it was fully up.

....now having disabled the 'send home' stuff it loads faster and I can use the mouse lhile it loads.....

Note sure what else to suggest, startup issues aside my NS8 has been fine since the Flash 7 & Time Zone lockup problem were fixed back in 2005.......

I learned to keep my hands off the mouse. It was taking an inoridnate amount of time to load only a couple of Tabs. I cut back on the Tabs, and with the fix, NS8 loaded very rapidly. The problem occurred when I tried to get to this newsgroup, which is not in a Tab.
I tried again this morning, and, I went to get my breakfast ready. Then, I tried to go to other sites, and NS88.1.2 did not lock up! First time in a few weeks.
You got something, but, I, also, feel that it is about time to chuck 8.x, for good.
Another thing. I save the profile, but after uninstalling all my passwords are gone.

Browser.jar file

Postby BillyBoy » Tue 20 Feb, 2007 1:09 pm

I looked in my Applications Data/Netscape folder and could not find this file. Where is it?

OOPS, NEVER MIND . I found it, thanks.

I also commented out the previously inserted line in the Hosts file, and the increase in speed of Netscape is very noticeable !

Thanks again.....I'm happy .....

I, normally, since I use a variety of browsers, I open them, and then close them very soon.
Since I started NS8.1.2, this morning, I have not closed it, and, I even, did a Spyware scan.
It is pretty slow, rendering some websites, but all the difference in the world.
Thanks macallan1824.
