Mozilla Firefox 3.0 Alpha 2 released

Postby beanboy89 » Wed 07 Feb, 2007 4:22 pm

The second alpha of Gecko 1.9 and Mozilla Firefox 3.0 have been released under the "Gran Paradiso" codename.

From the Release Notes:
Mozilla.org wrote:Changes in this Development Milestone

Gecko 1.9 Alpha 2 introduces several new features which can be tested by using Gran Paradiso Alpha 2:

* Core layout code affecting the calculation of widths in tables, floats, and absolutely positioned elements has been rewritten. The code for handling incremental layout of pages (as data arrives over the network, as images load, or as dynamic changes are made) has also been changed extensively. (See the Reflow-Refactoring wiki page for more information.
* Resolved remaining issues with ACID2 test compliance.
* Support for the Web Apps 1.0 API for changing stylesheets.
* The inline-block and inline-table values of CSS 2.1's display property are now implemented.
* XML documents can now be rendered as they're downloaded instead of only after the full document has been loaded.
* Greatly improved Mac widgets support since Alpha 1.
* Improvements in the Cairo graphics layer.

Some of the changes in Gecko 1.9 Alpha 2 will affect the web and platform compatibility of Gran Paradiso Alpha 2:

* Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME are not supported for Gecko 1.9.
* OS X 10.2 is no longer supported, and OS X 10.3.9 or better is required.
* The non-standard JavaScript Script object is no longer supported.
* Moving DOM nodes between documents now requires a call to importNode or adoptNode as per the DOM specification.

I just removed the nightly, after it started to steal default from my 2.0.0.1. I may get this build only if it does not insist in making itself default. I will test any version, but never allow a pre-beta to become my default.

Well, true to form... Firefox stinks on Mac. As an avid Mozilla/SeaMonkey user I tried Firefor a while back & it was just terrible. So slow & so lacking. I thought I would give 3.0 alpha 2 a try... Well, after each webpage taking several minutes just to find the sight & then begin to load it I drug Firefox to the trash & emptied it. So, I will never use Firefox, it stinks.
SeaMonkey rules!

Firefox rocks for me, but then... I'm using a Windows box. At least you have SeaMonkey to fall back on. I use it as well, although I don't find it as customizable as Firefox. The point is, we're not going over to Internet Explorer! :)

Disappointed they are abandoning us older OS owners . They didn't abandon 2000 but they did abandon ME , they both came out about the same time . Oh well I will stick with NS 7.2 and Sea Monkey which are noticeably faster anyway .

That's because they discontinued support for Windows 9x releases, including ME. Windows 2000 is based on a totally different codebase. The latest versions of SeaMonkey, when released, would have the same requirements as Firefox 3.0.

I thought that Gran Paradiso was renamed to Minefild.
Which project is the right one ?
I am currently using *3.0a3pre release (see UA string), which works great even with some modified themes, Compact menu and PDF download extensions...
To stay on track: What is the right codename for Firefox 3 project ?

Gran Paradiso is the codename for Firefox 3.0. Minefield is the codename for any trunk nightlys.
