Netscape 7.2 not working

Postby kat4 » Tue 22 May, 2007 8:46 pm

I had to do a system recovery on my computer yesterday to fix some problems I was having. I'd been using the 7.2 browser for years. I reinstalled all of my programs. But when it came to netscape, it's not working. I downladed the 8.13 and it works but I don't like it. I downloaded 7.0 and it works fine. But there are some features from 7.2 that I like. When I click on netscape 7.2 nothing at all happens. I uninstalled and reinstalled and re-downloaded the setup numerous times and nothing.

Someone please help!!!!!!!!!!! :? :? :?

What we'll try is this:-

 First uninstall Netscape 7.2 and any other versions of Netscape 6 or 7 that you have installed. (Netscape 8 is fine to leave alone).

 Then open C:\Program Files\Netscape (or wherever you installed Netscape 7.2) and delete the entire folder. Also do this for any other versions of Netscape 6 or 7 that you uninstalled.

 Now you need to find your Netscape profile. If you have a look at this page at Ramona's website it'll tell you how to do just that.

 Now make a backup copy of that profile, make a new folder in the C drive called Backup and copy the whole Netscape profile folder there. Now we've got a nice backup of your bookmarks, email etc.

 Now delete the original profile folder since we have a backup. (the entire Application Data\Mozilla\ folder)

 Now we've cleaned out all the gunk, we can try reinstalling Netscape 7.2. Grab a fresh copy from the NSBA and do an install.

Hopefully this works for you. :)

Make sure that you download the correct browser,i.e. 7.2. Mandrake's suggestions are sound. Perhaps you should check if the there is anything in Program Files|Common Files|mozilla.org|GRE. Any left over from 7.2 may have a single folder marked with numbers:1.7.2... The presence of this folder may prevent your program from starting.

It worked!!! I checked in the program files/common files/mozilla.org/GRE folder and there was a 1.7.2 folder in there. I deleted it and then installed the 7.2 browser again and now it's working. :D

Thank you both so much.... :)

It was a long shot, but I thought of such behavior when 7.1 had been uninstalled, and kept the GRE folder, thus preventing 7.2 from installing. And, again, I must ask myself why they split the GRE folder from the rest of the program, and placed it in the alleged Common Files?
