Recommended setting for an intel core duo cpu 6600 @2.40ghz

Postby Cdub21 » Tue 05 Jun, 2007 8:07 pm

I just installed the intel core duo cpu 6600 @2.40ghz but have been having problems with the cpu temperature. The CPU temperature reaches an extermely high level which results in the motherboard shutting down. I have tried to install a second fan to try and cool the system down but that was unsuccessful. I believe my problem has something to do with the amount of voltage the processor is trying to handle but am not sure how to fix it. If anyone could please help I would really appreciate it. Thanks

To verify that it's a voltage problem, try running CPU-Z while the system's still booted (provided you can get that far without the machine shutting down) and reading the voltage off it. The stock voltage for an E6600 is anywhere between 0.85 and 1.3525 volts, depending on power-saving options you might have enabled.

After running the software CPU-Z, I was able to found that the voltage I'm currenting running at is 1.248. So according to Don_HH2K this should be ok unless I have some power-saving options enabled. Where would I be able to find out about the power-saving options?? Or what else should I be checking if its not the voltage??

You are using the stock Intel fan, correct? The push pins that Intel uses for the fan can be a little tricky to get on. You probably haven't got them down properly. Otherwise your temperatures shouldn't exceed 50C or so, even under a full load on both CPU cores.

See this little image:

Image

To remove the fan:-

1) Disconnect the CPU fan cable from the connector on the motherboard

2) Rotate each fastener on the fan counterclockswise

3) Pull up two fasteners at a time in a diagonal (start with the ones I circled in green in the above image) sequence. This will loosen the fan from the motherboard.

4) Carefully pull the fan up and off the processor.

Now try putting it back on, making sure all four of the push pins go down properly so the CPU fan is securely attached to the processor.

No problem. Glad you got it worked out. :)

Those Intel fans are prone to getting a lot of dust in them too. It's worthwhile taking the fan off and cleaning the dust out every three months or so.
