The most important new feature of Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac is probably the native hardware 3D graphic support which includes OpenGL and DirectX. New tools includes Parallels SmartSelect for cross OS application and file integration, Parallels Explorer for offline access to virtual machine files, and Linux Tools for integration between Mac OS X and Linux.

Parallels Desktop is virtualisation software that allows other OSes, such as Windows and Linux, to run simultaneously along with Mac OS X.

Version 3 is priced at US$79.99. Current users will be able to upgrade to the new version from any previous version for US$49.99, or pre-order the upgrade for $39.99 (until 6th June 2007).

Doesn't Quake 4 already run natively on Mac OS X anyway?

I don't know, you can check out Apple - Games, from Apple's website.

Who says there are no games for Mac?

Direct3D support is interesting. There is Direct3D support in VMware as well. The problem is that it's still going to be significantly slower than running the games in Windows natively.

Cnet NEWS.com's report:
Unlike a February update, which was free to existing Parallels customers, current users will have to pay $49.99 for the new version. The full list price of the software is $79.99.

Parallels is about to get more competition, however. Virtualization specialist VMware, which has been testing its own Fusion product for the Mac, plans to release a fourth beta on Friday, with a goal of releasing the product later this summer.

The new version of Parallels software is available for download and in trial form from the company's Web site, with retail stores expected to have the new versions on shelves in about two weeks.
