Perhaps a subforum on "Pets" or "Animals" would be more inclusive that one for Cats, although I do not object to one for cats. I rather like cats myself. 
Occasional threads on pets could always go in the General Area subforum.

Shocked as I am to see myself typing this, I have to agree with Shark Daddy. 
This is primarily a techie/geekie site, and I personally like to keep my forums seperated by their main topic. Now admittedly, this has a general section, and a MS-Win section (er..that's still geekie though), taking on a pet section would be a perty darn sharp fork in the road.
Now, having said that...This IS your site Antony, so add what you want. I wouldn't ignore people asking for help in it if I felt I could answer a question.
