Running Windows on Intel-based Mac? or vice-versa?

Postby Antony » Sun 22 Jan, 2006 4:53 am

Cnet has a nice FAQ on if you can run Windows natively on Apple's new Intel-based Mac.

A few notes from the FAQ:
Just because you might get Windows running on a Mac, or Tiger running on their Dell, doesn't mean it's legal.
...
The challenge comes in the technical means by which the operating systems load. Windows loads itself using something known as the Basic Input/Output System, or BIOS. Apple's Intel Macs, however, use a newer technology known as Extensible Firmware Interface.
...
Q: What about running the Mac OS on a non-Apple PC?
A: There isn't a legal way to do that, given that Apple doesn't sell standalone versions of its operating system. Because all Macs come with some form of the Mac OS, the retail boxes that Apple sells are only licenses to upgrade from one version to another.

According to The Mac Observer and MacDailyNews,

Apple has hidden a poem inside OS X that warns users not to pirate the operating system, according to OSx86 Project. The Web site noted on Tuesday: "a few pieces of OS X look for a secret message in 'commpage' that gets decrypted via the TPM... basically a decoder ring for geeks. " The poem reads:

Your karma check for today:
There once was a user that whined
his existing OS was so blind,
he'd do better to pirate
an OS that ran great
but found his hardware declined.
Please don't steal Mac OS!
Really, that's way uncool.

News from The Mac Observer, one of the major unethical groups dedicated on hacking Mac OS X (Intel) and providing instructions on how to install OS X on an unauthorised PCs have hit the DCMA violation notice.

In their forum's main page, they said
We're sorry to report that despite our best efforts, the OSx86 Project has been served with a DMCA violation notice. The forum will be unavailable while we evaluate its contents to remove any violations present. We thank you for your patience in this matter.

well done Apple!

CNN's story on this: Apple's ode to hackers

Apple confirmed Thursday it has included such a warning in its Intel-based computers since it started selling them in January.

The embedded poem reads: "Your karma check for today: There once was a user that whined/his existing OS was so blind/he'd do better to pirate/an OS that ran great/but found his hardware declined./Please don't steal Mac OS!/Really, that's way uncool./(C) Apple Computer, Inc."

Apple also put in a separate hidden message, "Don't Steal Mac OS X.kext," in another spot for would-be hackers.

"We can confirm that this text is built into our products," Apple issued in a statement. "Hopefully it, and many other legal warnings, will remind people that they should not steal Mac OS X."

Sorry, those are fake news. Win2OSX.net is down simply because when OSx86project.org went down, they got too many visitors, and they reached their bandwidth limit.

But now there was one interesting news saying new 'update' released
enables it to run on non-Apple Intel-based PCs.

And later:
According to his ['Maxxuss'] blog, there are still some issues with AMD CPUs and iTunes, as well as with DVD Playback and ATI SSE2. However, this is still pretty remarkable.

This is a very bad news. Maxxuss should be punished for cracking the Mac OS X platform we love.

The thing is, nobody knows who "maxxuss" really is. So they can't sue a person they don't know the identity of.

Attempts at booting Vista under an Intel iMac by OSx86Project are improving: Now, Vista can get all the way to this. It eventually freezes when it reaches crcdisk.sys.

From The Mac Observer.
Apple closes OS X Intel Kernel.
The Intel version of Mac OS X has a closed kernel, thanks to fears over piracy, according to InfoWorld's Tom Yager. While the kernel in the PowerPC version of OS X was open source, and thus alterable, the new one "no longer possesses the quality that elevated Linux to its status as the second most popular commercial OS," Mr. Yager wrote.

He added, however, that Apple's official position on the matter is that the OS X x86 kernel is "in flux," and his hope is that when the company ships Intel-based Xserves and Power Macs, its "flux settles into a strategy that favors demanding users and developers."

Tom Yager's column at InfoWorld.
Please note that in Tom Yager's article,
Tom Yager wrote:(...) Apple’s workstation and server will be built using next-generation 64-bit x86 CPUs.
Apple has NOT made any official statement on such account. The 64-bit x86 CPUs should be considered as author's guess.

Apple has responded Tom Yager's speculation.

The Mac Observer has a report on this:
Responding to a column by Tom Yager that Apple will not release the Mac OS X kernel source code for Intel-based Macs, Apple product manager Ernie Prabhaker said on one of the company's mailing lists: "Nothing has been announced, so he (and everyone else) certainly has the right to speculate. But please don't confuse 'speculation' with 'fact.'"

He also wrote: ". We continue to release *all* the Darwin sources for our PowerPC systems, and so far has released all the non-kernel Darwin sources for Intel."

Last Wednesday, Mr. Yager speculated that Apple wasn't going to release the source code for the Mac OS X kernel on Intel processors because of piracy fears. However, he pointed out that, as Mr. Prabhaker said, Apple's policy on the matter wasn't set yet, and he hoped the company settles on "a strategy that favors demanding users and developers."

the OsX86 project has returned in the form of http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/

i already sent an email to Apple about te site, what they do with it...we can only hope.

i cant stand my favourite OS being hacked and cracked to those undeserving systems.

pls pls pls, if anyone of you find such websites, pls report them to Apple. Lesser 'patched' OS X roaming the net = more incentive for Apple to create new OSes.

there are some distros apparently flating around in this newsgroup:

alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc.os

i dont know how to send this newsgroup link to Apple though, some one help me?
