Greetings,

I finally took the plunge and "upgraded" from my old Mozilla mail to the new Thunderbird. It seems to work perfectly. I also updated my Firefox browser at the same time.

Question: since I don't want to use the old Mozilla mail anymore, and since it seems to have moved everything to Thunderbird, can/should I uninstall it? Or is it more complicated than that?

The only problem I've noticed is that, when I'm in Firefox and click on the mail icon to the left of the url bar, it takes me to the old Mozilla mail. That also happened at first when I clicked on the mail icon in the bottom left Windows tray, but I was able to change the properties of that icon and now it opens in Thunderbird.

Is there a way to point the Firefox mail icon to Thunderbird? Perhaps it's looking at the old Mozilla profile?

Just a quick afterthought. To the best of my knowledge, Windows thinks that T'bird is my default mail program. I went through the Control Panel under Internet settings and checked it.

The best way to select the Default is to do it within the program. Tools|Options|General|System Defaults for Thunderbird. If Mozilla has a Set Default grayed out, it means that it is default as a browser. In addition, it may have some boxes checked in Mail settings to be default for mail.
If your settings in Windows|Control Panel|Add/Remove|Set default settings|Custom it will go
along with your settings within the program(s). You don't have to uninstall Mozilla, but if you are satisfied with the standalones, go ahead and do it. Your profile will remain, and it may be a good way to have a backup.

Ah, Fulvio, I only upgraded to Firefox 1.5. But your message is enlightening....I have no idea where the little mail icon to the left of the url came from. It was there in my older version of Firefox also.

So perhaps I should just remove that mail icon from the tool bar....but now I'm curious. When you are using Firefox and want to go to your e-mail client, is there a quick link from your browser window through to your e-mail?

With 1.5 all you need to do is to select Tools|Options|Mail or Get Mail. I don't remember exactly which. I have 2.0.0.4 which requires an an addon (extention) to have a Get Mail button.
As for your mail button, I have no recollection of ever seeing one near the URL bar, nor what it is for. It is pretty crowded there.
What does it look like, if you do a mouseover, what does it say?

Thanks, because now I see that by using Tools I can simply click on Get Mail. When I do that, however, it takes me back to my old Mozilla mail! [By the way, nothing happens when I mouseover the mail icon that's on the toolbar to the left of the url box. That icon looks like an envelope with a letter popping out, and it has a small down arrow that, if you click on it, offers both a "read mail" and a "new message" option.]

So now I think that the problem isn't with that strange mail icon---I can simply get rid of it and use the "tools" option. The real problem seems to be that, although Windows knows that T'bird is my default mail program, the Firefox menu/toolbar continues to link back to my old Mozilla mail. Strangely, though, if I click on an e-mail link within a Firefox browser window, it takes me right to T'bird.

Is there a place within Firefox that is supposed to point to the correct mail program? I've played around with the Tools and Options settings and don't see anything like that.

Although I never heard of the location which you mention, the icon is like that found in 1.5, if brought out from View|Toolbars|comfigure. Try to drag and drop back into the Conffure toolbar manager. Hoever it is a legitimate link which I had on the top toolbar, and I used it as an alternate to Tools|Get Mail. So, you are correct that's not where the problem lies.
At this point, I would uninstall Mozilla, and makesure that you select TB as default, after that, i.e. "Check now" button (but if you have not tried this before, do it, before proceeding to un install Mozilla. I don't see any reason why Mozilla would defy your selection.
I had a problem, since solved, with Firefox opening links with a different profile, but still of Thunderbird.
I don't know if the Get Mail3.0 Plus extention would work with FF1.5.x. It allows you to select the path to desired Mail Client, whether it is default or not.
Check everything else, first.

Humpd and Fulvio,

Your advice and suggestions much appreciated---problem is fixed!

First, I went back and made sure that T'bird was selected as the default mail program: both by using the T'bird "tools/options" and by using Windows Control Panel. At that point, clicking on the mail link in Firefox still took me back to the old Mozilla mail.

Then I downloaded and installed the utility mentioned in Humpd's message: it worked like a charm! Now when I click on "tools/read mail" or on the little envelope icon from the customized toolbar choices, they both take me to T'bird.

I really appreciate your help and patient instruction here. I think that I will still uninstall the old Mozilla mail since I see no need for it.

You can't uninstall just Mozilla Mail. Still, I don't know if you look in the Mozilla preferences|Mail and newsgroups|General settings. The boxes for Mail and News are probably unchecked. That's the way I have my preferences in Seamonkey, the successor to Mozilla. In addition, I had a box in Thunderbird checked to see if it is default on startup.
But, whatever works. I will keep humpd link handy, just in case.

Concerning the location of the'Mail' icon -

With Firefox 1.5[.9 at the moment] one can locate (place) it on whichever toolbar he wishes.
Go to View > Toolbars > Customize.
But before clicking on Customize, note the names of the two standard toolbars: Navigation, and Bookmarks. Navigation is the bar that you appear to be referring to as the URL location.
After clicking on Customze - with the 'Customize Toolbar' panel displayed - one can move an icon (Mail is the one I just experimented with) to:
- the Customize panel (remove from any toolbar),
- either standard (Navigation or Bookmarks) toolbar, or
- even to the Menu bar (File / Edit / ...)!
I haven't experimented with it, but the panel offers one the capability of creating a custom toolbar.

The location I use for the Mail icon (and the one that Fulvio referred to) is the Bookmarks toolbar.

I call it the Menu toolbar, i.e. the top toolbar with File, Edit, View, etc.. It is referred also as the main-menubar. I like it because there is a lot of room there.
The "Bookmarks Toolbar" is also known as the Personal Toolbar, and I have no extra room there.
