Sorry Capt, I don't understand what you are referencing.

I'd like to thank everyone who has tried to help solve the problem.

Now that I've had to deal with not using the buttons I had before, its grown familiar and does not bug me like it did. Maybe in the next upgrade the buttons will work again.

Thanks.

MMottster,

Sorry I could not help you any.... :(

Unfortunately it still leaves the question open "why does it not work for you"....

I do not use these "features" but like to dink around to see how things work. I am not overly fond of the "Mouse" and "buttons" but it is interesting.....

I did discover that there are two additional "buttons" that can be moved to the menu bars...

"Next" and "Previous" - these seem to only effect "unread" messages, NOT a list of viewed messages.

Entirely to many "Buttons" and icons for this ol' man.

This fix worked for me..

Postby xrunner » Sat 07 Jul, 2007 11:56 am

I had the same Back/Forward problem. Here's how I fixed it:

1) While in Thunderbird (obviously), open one of the emails to read it.
2) Right-click on the Tool-bar and selected "Customize...".
3) Drag the broken "Back" and "Forward" buttons into the pop-up window that contains the selectable buttons. (Yes, you are removing the two buttons that do not work.)
4) Drag the "Previous" and "Next" buttons from the pop-up window and drop them on the tool-bar.

The "Previous" and "Next" buttons work just like the "Back" and "Forward" used to work.

I brought this up on my post of July 2. I have no idea what the fuss is about, and, having two forward buttons would be confusing, at best.
I never used any of these buttons for the simple reason that they do not help. I look for specific headers or senders, but clicking whatever button it is called would be a good wait to slow me down. Some changes are really annoying, like dropping the Get Mail button from Firefox, but this Back and forward is a non-issue.
FF and TB would, really be customized if one could give buttons any name which comes to mind.

Thank you XRunner!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. Now I don't have to close out or delete an email to get to the next new in line to be read!!!!

Thanks again!

I had the same problem after upgrading Thunderbird and your fix (below) worked for me.

It is interesting that after making the above changes, if you go back into Customize and click the "restore default set" button, Thunderbird puts it back the way it was:roll: , with the greyed out "back" and "forward" buttons. That tells me the staff at Mozilla haven't quite gotten all there ducks in a row on a recent change to Thunderbird...

And, if you want buttons galore, the is the Penelope addon which brings into Thunderbird features of Eudora.
Confusing as heck if not familiar with Eudora.

Glad they answered your questions. I am 75, and get a lot of e-mail, and, hardly ever, I look at the mail consecutively. So the buttons are of of no use to me. In fact, I remove them, as they clutter the toolbar.

@captjlddavis - many thanks.

This annoyed the hell out of me for quite some time until I found your previous/next suggestion. Astounding that Thunderbird hasn't changed this default in so many years.

All of these responses are great, but the root question has not been answered.

All of the answers address going back and forth to NEW messages.

I need to know how to go back and forth to ANY and ALL messages - unread and read. Not sure why this is so complicated to accomplish. It seems very basic?

The buttons that will read any message whether read or unread are called Back and Forwards. The buttons that work only on unread messages are called Next and Previous.
