5 Security Holes Found in Opera 7.0 Final

Postby DJGM » Tue 04 Feb, 2003 1:32 pm

Oh dear, this is not good for Opera. Only a few days after the final release
of Opera 7.0, a total of five security holes have been found in the newly
updated web browser. Three of these vulns are rated as severe.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Thanks for the heads up DJGM! The workaround seems pretty simple for now, however:

In Preferences, Disable JavaScript

Change this line in the console.html file, in Opera's installation directory:
m.replace( /\\/g, "\\\\" ) +
To Read:
m.replace( /\\/g, "\\\\" ).replace(/"/g,"&") +

Not the best kind of PR, after a brand new Release...

As of this hour, 7.0 is still listed as the download from their home page, but a version 7.01 is showing on their FTP site.

Thanks also from me. :)

Ramona,
is the line to be changed, beside disabling Javascript?
I usually take my sweet time with these downloads, but since I had wholesale corruption of files, I saw that the 7 final was available, and I got it. One would never know by going through the site that there is any potential problem, and I , surely do not see any 7.01 anywhere.

Installed Opera 7.01 successfully.

Very impressed with its speed. Feel faster than Phoenix 5.0 and Netscape 7.01.

Slight problem with display of bigger size Chinese fonts.

In general, V Impressed!

Yes, the line must be changed, in addition to disabling JavaScript. However, with the "fixed" Version of Opera 7.01, the workaround is moot.

Indeed. Within five days is certainly better than . . . several months!
