PlayStation 3 hits 1 million in Japan

Postby Antony » Thu 19 Jul, 2007 2:14 am

News from Australian IT, PlayStation 3 has finally sold 1 million units in Japan. It took Sony 8 months. Nintendo's Wii took only two months. And the popular Microsoft Xbox 360 which started almost a year ahead of PS3 has not even reached half a million units in Japan.

SALES of Sony's PlayStation 3 game console have surpassed one million units in Japan in about eight months after its launch, more than four times as long as it took Nintendo's hot-selling Wii to reach the same mark.

According to game magazine publisher Enterbrain, Sony has sold 1.01 million units of the PS3 as of July 15, while Wii sales totaled 2.9 million units as of July 8. Sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 have come to 420,705 units.

Sony's PlayStation 3 hit shelves in Japan on November 11, while the Wii made its debut on December 2. The Xbox 360 has been on sale in Japan since December 2005.

Sony, which dominated the $US30 billion global game industry over the past decade, has seen a slow start for the PS3 due to its high price and scarcity of strong game titles.

The Xbox 360, although popular in the United States, has been struggling to gain traction in Japan, home to Sony and Nintendo.

shame there aren't any good games on the ps3, unless you get enjoy wondering around brown landscapes and shooting things, then you're spoilt for choice.

I doubt they've sold many Playstation 3s here. The $1000 price tag is utterly crazy for a next generation console. The Wii is only $400, the Xbox 360 Premium is $600.

Well, to put it into perspective, let's take the PlayStation 2. At the 2000 North American launch, a console went for US$300. Two and a half years later it came down to $200; a year after that it came down to $179; a year after that it came down to $149, and yet another year after it came down to $130. And for the records, I got a used PS2 a few months ago for under $100, after the PS3 came out.

The PS3 Premium (60GB) model around here is US$600, making it twice as expensive as the PS2. Assuming that the PS3 has the same time footprint as the PS2 and would undergo price cuts at roughly the same intervals, a PS3 might be had by June 2009 for $400, $350 by June 2010, $300 by 2011, and $250 by 2012. And for that matter I might be able to pick up a used PS3 for $200.

IMHO, the PS3's launch was disappointing. The only launch title I'd have considered playing that wasn't out on the PC or PS2 at the same time was Resistance: Fall of Man, and there's no chance I'd spend $600 to play a single game for a month or two until more show up.

I've already decided to buy an Xbox 360 sometime before October for Grand Theft Auto IV, Halo 3 and Resident Evil 5. The Xbox 360 offers 90% of the power of the PS3 but at a much more affordable price range.

I might have considered getting a Wii, but the real reason for the console purchase was GTA IV and RE 5, neither of these titles will be available for the Wii.

The one crazy thing is that Microsoft wants $50 AUD for the Xbox 360 VGA cable. $50 for a cable to connect an Xbox 360 to my LCD monitor. :x
