Log on for Newsgroups

Postby abright52 » Thu 06 Feb, 2003 8:42 am

I have a Newsgroup for my University that I am trying to make work, but no go.

I am using 7.01. The newsgroup will show two threads when you are not logged in. I can see those just fine. What do I have to do to log in to see the rest of the groups?? I have seen no option to do this in the Account Settings, and it does not ask me for a password, since logging in is not required.

Please see Newsgroup passwords not remembered? Paw through this!

Thanks for the reply.

That post doesn't really apply to my case.

The problem is that I can't get a username/password box to pop up. In Outlook there is a newsgroup setting that you can enter your username/password into, but there is no such thing in Netscape 7.01.

When you do not have a password entered there are 2 default threads, but when you enter your username/password you can access the rest of the threads.

I have no place to enter my username/password so that I can gain access to the remaining threads.

Is it possible that your University block the access?

It can be accessed fine with Outlook Express, so it is not blocked.

Is there anyway possible to set this up in Netscape?

Is their server a secure server (SSL)? If so, make sure you have that option checked in the news server account settings. I know of one news server that is an secure server where if it isn't checked you see some groups, but not all.

If that is NOT the case...then...hmm...well....this is my other take on it:
They apparently have it setup where ANYONE can access a few groups, but with authenticated access you see more groups. Is that what you are saying?

If that indeed is the case, then considering Netscape only asks for a nntp username/password if REQUIRED (which is not the case in this situation), I don't think you'll ever see all of the groups in Netscape unless you use some sort of local news server like Hamster to pull from the University then setup Netscape to pull from Hamster.

Mind you, that may be the wrong way to go, but from what you've said, if it isn't an SSL server, that is the only solution I can think of.

If all else fails, I would suggest calling the webmaster for the university site. Ask them what setting are required to successful use N7.01.

No, it is not SSL. The second case is correct.

I will just have to go with Outlook Express for the University newgroups, I guess.

Unfortunately, as with many University anymore, my University does not support Netscape to any extent. So, no help there.

Thanks anyway, guys!

If anyone comes up with any solutions, let me know!

Not so fast! Try typing out the server and group name as a link, then click on it. For example, snews://secnews.netscape.com/netscape.netscape7.windows would get you subscribed to the Netscape 7 group on Netscapes server if you were using the old NS Communicator, so clicking the link in NS 7.01 ought to do it as well. Just guessing so far, I haven't tried it myself. Email yourself the link, or try File | Open Web Location and put it in there. If the link does go through, the server should ask for your name and password.

I did that, it never asked me for a user name or password, but it did allow me to subscribe to that newgroup.

Would it be "snews://" at my University also? All I have from them is "news.wiu.edu"

I will try it when I get back to a fast internet connection at school.

It will be snews if they are a secure server, which you said they aren't. Terra's example is for the Netscape secure news servers, which do require SSL.

Well, I gave that a try, couldn't seem to make it work no matter what I did. If anyone else wants to see if they can get a login box here is the info:

bb.wiu.edu

For a group, try "Athletics"

This is what I tried:
"news://bb.wiu.edu/Athletics"

It asked me if I would like to subscribe, I clicked Yes. And then it said it does not exist.

But "news://bb.wiu.edu/News" will work perfectly.

This page shows how it is supposed to be setup in most news readers:
http://www.student.services.wiu.edu/ess ... boards.asp

Is there any other way to make this work??

The good news is - I got the login box for your server :D
The bad news is - I had to use my Netscape 4.79 :(

I think you can make this work for NS 7.01, but...

I used the link "news://bb.wiu.edu/News" in 4.79 and got that group okay. When I went to subscribe to more groups, the only other one shown was "Scholarships". So I went into Preferences and edited the properties for bb.wiu.edu, unchecking "Only ask me for my user name and password when necessary" and checking "Always ask me for my user name and password". The next time I went to subscribe, the login box popped up.

Problem is, I can't find any place in 7.01 where I can tell Netscape to "Always ask me for my user name and password". The only solution I can think of is to get the server and groups all set up in an older Netscape version, like my 4.79, then install 7.01 and have it convert your old Netscape profile. When I installed 7.01 here, all my previous newsgroups from 4.79 got carried over without a hitch. I don't know if you have an older Netscape (you should!) or if you want to reinstall 7.01, but I would give it a shot.

Sorry Albright52. Identical results as Terra. I even went so far as to edit the hostinfo.dat and RC file for the news server (geek speak, just nod and smile if you don't understand that :) ), manually adding the Athletics group. I had hoped that if I got it to show up in Netscape 7, I could get it to prompt me for a username and password. Well, I got it to show up, but all it would do is say something along the lines of "This group does not seem to exist, would you like to unsubscribe from it?".

It is just the way Netscape 7 currently deals with usernames and passwords for Newsgroups, unfortunately. It is about the weakest link in the suite. Not to say that it is inherently bad, just lacking in some functionality (which I guess in your case means bad...).

Tragically, I don't think setting it up in 4.7x and migrating it over to a new NS 7 profile would help simply because 4.7x did not store news server passwords anywhere. You had to enter them each session. It galls me to say it, but you are probably better off using OE, or Forte Agent, Xnews, etc. for now to access this newsgroup. (My recommendation...Xnews).

Thanks for all of the help and for trying. I sent feedback to Netscape about this problem, hopefully it will be different in the next release.

Again, Thanks!
