According to BetaNews, Sony has released the 80GB model of PlayStation 3, and it is priced at US$ 599 (same as previous 60GB model). Meanwhile, the 60GB model will be discontinued and the price for 60GB model is dropped to US$499 (while supplies remain.)

If you're in the US, sure. What's annoying is that this price cut is only until Sony is out of stock of the 60GB model, then you're out of luck.

It's worth noting the 60GB PS3 US model has the hardware to run virtually all of the original Playstation and PS2 games. The newer 80GB model doesn't, to save costs. It's all done via software emulation; like the Xbox 360. As a result, the number of PS2 games the 80GB PS3 can support is much lower than the 60GB version.

The price, here in Australia, is still quite outrageous at $1000. When the Nintendo Wii is selling for $400 and the XBox 360 is selling for $500 or $600 (depending on the model), I don't see how they can hope to sell many of these.

Even after buying an Xbox 360 Premium, four games, the play and charge kit, and the VGA cable for the 360, I'm still well under the $1000 it would cost for the PS3 alone.

Does the software emulation of Xbox games on Xbox 360 affect the performance a lot? Or hardly noticeable?

Does the software emulation of Xbox games on Xbox 360 affect the performance a lot? Or hardly noticeable?

In what I've seen, there's no noticeable difference at the lower resolutions, but in 720p the system lags to between 20 and 30fps in the worst situations. Most of the time it'll deliver a solid sixty.

The PlayStation 3 got around this by sticking an R3051 and R5900 right on board for compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games. Nintendo took a different route and used a similar CPU architecture in the Wii as they did on the Gamecube, so not much emulation is required.
