BootCamp vs VMware Fusion vs Parallels Desktop vs CrossOver

Postby Antony » Sun 19 Aug, 2007 12:51 am

Cnet Labs (Crave) published benchmark result of Windows performance on the Mac. They tested Apple's own Boot Camp (public beta), VMware Fusion 1.0, Parallels Desktop 3.0 and CrossOver Mac 6.0 which based on open-source API, Wine.

Without a doubt, boot into Windows directly (via Boot Camp) gives the best performance.

Between VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion supports multi-core, hence higher performance, however, Quake 4 only runs on Parallels Desktop.

There's another read from Macworld UK, Mac virtualization wars: VMWare v Parallels

Currently, VMWare Fusion has Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) support and x64 support, but Parallels Desktop is the only (currently) environment that supports 3D gaming, and OpenGL applications like Quake 4. Parallels says SMP and x64 support will be in the future.

[quote]Even with these additional features, can VMWare’s solution carve itself a niche in a market where Parallels has already got a strong footing? According to Garsthagen, Parallels may have become well known in the Mac market but VMWare is popular amongst PC users. “A lot of potential users are familiar with the VMWare product because they come from the PC world, and we have been very popular there. In that market segment we are more popular than Parallels.â€

VirtualBox now has a Mac version. This is the first free virtualization product for Intel-based Macs.
