A few small Windows "tweaks"...

Postby Mandrake » Fri 07 Feb, 2003 9:27 am

I want to accomplish a few things:

1) Display the Windows version and Sp version on the desktop
2) I want to be able to hide the "My Compuer" icon.

I am running Win2k Pro w/SP3.

Thanks in advance!

Oh, another thing that would be very handy - would be allowing the resolution of 1152x864 ... I recently installed a new graphics card, and I can use 1024x768 ... but not 1152x864 - I have the latest drivers for the card installed, and the latest monitor drivers. 1152x864 would work fine with the old card.

I don't know about this part, but you can do a number of interesting things with ItweakU. The limited program is free from: http://www.jokesoft.com and they always make me feel guilty by not not buying ther Pro version, but for someone who even hides the IE icons, it would not be an useful investment. Take a look at the web site. I have the Windows version displayed, and I am hiding My Network Neighborhood, and you can hide a lot more.

Displaying the windowsversion on your desktop and hiding the my computer can both be done with the TweakUI from MickeySoft. Don't know exactly where you can download it right now, but just look at the download section of www.microsoft.com.

Screenresolution maybe available throuht: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Display, Settings tab, Advanced button, Adapter tab, List All Modes button. There are almost more options here than on the Settings tab.

Just be sure not to get the XP TweakUI from Microsoft. I don't believe it works with 2K. I had 2K loaded awhile back and used the TweakUI for 98 just fine. If you want me to email it to you, just PM me (or email me, slap me upside the head with a salmon, whatever).

I would encourage you do a selective install only though, and not use the "install.inf" file. Personally I just install "Explore from here", "Sendto extensions", "find extensions", "Command prompt from here", and "TweakUI" (which is the one that lets you put version # on desktop).

Er...scratch find extensions...if memory serves, that added nothing more to 2k.

Ok. Thanks for your help everyone. I have achieved the desired effects with the version name on the desktop, and the my computer Icon. But the resolution it still baffling me. I tried the advanced mode, I can get 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 - but no 1152x864.

That may very well just be a function of your graphics card. Go check your video card's technical data. If it isn't in any documentation that came with the card, perhaps the manufacturer has it available on their Website.

Or it may be a result of your graphics card in combination with whatever monitor your computer thinks you have. Make sure you have the right .inf file for your monitor AND that your computer recognizes the monitor properly (getting my machine to recognize my Viewsonic a90f properly instead of just 'plug-n-play' was a nightmare).

I had thought that both the monitor and card would have to support the same resolution, however with the (now) previous video card I was able to use resolutions supported by the card, but not the monitor, and it worked fine.

Typing this sentence with 1152x864 resolution, the screen looks somewhat compressed, and although I cannot locate the monitor book to see if tihs is supported, 1152x864 is supported by the card.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled resolution. :)
