I have Netscape 7.2 & 8 still in my computer, but Netscape 9 is my default, however it doesn't always come up, it reverts to Netscape 7.2 sometimes and then asks if I want it to be my default and I always chose no. Such as a few minutes ago I received the automated email that you had responded to my post and it gave me the link to go to in the email, I clicked on that link and instead of using Netscape 9 that I had already opened up and using it, it automatically opened Netscape 7.2...

All this is not correct. Basically, Netscape7.2 mail is part of a Suite which includes the browser, so opening an e-mail through a link will leave NS9 out. But if you use NS9 as default browser, and a standalone like Thunderbird, there is no issue.
The above complaint has existed since standalone browsers came out. One must use it either
with a standalone mail, or use a Suite for both mail and browser, or put up with it.

Netscape 9 RC1

Postby bamarules01 » Mon 15 Oct, 2007 4:35 pm

I have installed the new Netscape on all three of my computers and on everyone of them the following is at the bottom of the browser page:

_ _ _ _^<menuitem id="menu_HelpPopup_reportertoolmenu"

Can anyone tell me why and how to get rid of it. :?

Weird Bar

Postby tennesseeland » Mon 15 Oct, 2007 5:09 pm

When I opened up Netscape 9 today it prompted me to installed another new update, any idea if this newer update will fix the "Weird Bar" issue. I haven't deleted the other one yet and re-installed yet, been kind of dreading doing that...

"Weird Bar"

Postby tennesseeland » Tue 16 Oct, 2007 12:12 pm

Forgive me, I'm not computer savvy at all. Walk me through the quickest, easiest way to get rid of this ___ bar. Please use basic exact terms from beginning to end. And also, I now understand that I should use Thunderbird as my email, instead of the old Netscape 7.2, to make things flow better, please walk me through that (and please don't let me loose my profiles and I hope it looks and acts very similar, don't want to have to re-learn everything again) and then should I delete Netscape 7.2 & 8 out of my computer after that and if so exactly how do I do that. Sure wish Netscape would have just included the whole suite in the new updates, sure would have made it easier on everyone, even if they didn't change anything in the email portion, just included it to where all these other problems don't occur, I just don't understand, seems like poor business in a way to me....

In first place, Netscape was bought by AOL, and let die in 2003. I have no idea why AOL is even resurrecting Netscape, while they are cutting personnel by up to 20%. So, what you get may not not be here tomorrow. It is not a business decision.
You never want to delete a program, because in Windows you don't just have what you see, i.e. the files and folders, but also the Registry.
My answer can be a bit complicated, but you will not lose anything, although the links to the profiles may be broken.
Since expressed a desire to have a Suite, rather than standalone programs, why don't you get Seamonkey, which is like Netscape7.2. If you stop using NS7.2, opening Seamonkey should pick up the profile. It should be the easiest approach, but don't be tempted to use both Netscape and Seamonkey with the same profile. But keep 7.2 until everything is satisfactory.
Just FYO, there have been 24 updates since NS7.2.

Weird Bar

I opened Netscape 9 today and it did an automatic update again behind the scene, and this new update took care of the Weird Bar situaton. On another note, does the SeaMonkey look similar and work similar to Netscape 9 and Netscape 7.2 email???

I must have posted this a dozen times, but, unfortunately, the word does not get around.
The automatic update is due to the fact the Tools|Options|Advanced|Update allow downlods, etc. You can change that setting to "Ask what I want to do". Yo can delay the download, or forget about it. If you have broadband downloading the full installer would eliminate all the problems.
Yes, on the other note. There are differences, not detectable by someone who is not into it, but using the same Theme, there is no difference other than the name.

Weird Bar

Postby tennesseeland » Thu 18 Oct, 2007 5:10 pm

Sorry, you missed my main point. What I am mainly stating is that the NEW last update automatically took care of the "weird bar" that was at the bottom, after the last New update it fixed that problem, the "weird bar" is now no longer there...

Thanks for the heads up on SeaMonkey, I think I'll try it

Sorry,
I did not read your post as I should have. At this point, you are one of two people who allowed the auto-update to proceed, and the problem went away. A number of other people did not eliminate the problem. I don't understand this.

The 1st update (about a week or 2 ago) caused the problem, but this last update (a day or 2 ago) solved the problem, maybe the people you are referring to did not get this very last update OR maybe they were afraid to let this last update go on through, as I was sceptical about it myself, but went ahead and let it go, hoping that maybe Netscape realized the problem and sent a fix in the last update???

You may be right. I am not sure what other people did. All I know is that I never allow automatic updates, and never had problems..

Seamonkey

Postby tennesseeland » Tue 22 Jan, 2008 2:41 pm

Do you still recommend Seamonkey to replace Netscape Browser & Email as a suite, I didn't download it yet and was about to do so, but thought I would ask 1 more time in case something different may have come along. I never did download Netscape 9, should I do that first or will it even matter. I have slow dial up so downloading anything is a slow process. I hope after downloading Seamonkey it's not complicated to transfer all my current old emails, profile, etc., etc. over to Seamonkey..

To summarize: Netscape 7.2 and SeaMonkey are suitres, which contain both Mail and Browser. Unless you messed up somewhere along the line, when you open Seamonkey it should pick up that profile, ptreviously, used by Netscape7.2. I had uninstalled NS7.2 in November, and SeaMonkey is using Mail, except for the over two month gap. So, unless you messed up the 7.2 profile, you will be ok. No extra work is needed.
NS8 and 9 are browser only, and are, completely independent of NS7.2 or SeaMonkey.
