Netscape 9.0 Final is out

J-M wrote:I decided to try the following URL to get information about official security fixes:
http://browser.netscape.com/ns9/security/alerts.jsp

But it doesn't work, the URL generates 404 error and page doesn't exists.

However, it is expected that all security vulnerabilities since previous Gecko engine 1.7.5 have been fixed with this release.

The easiest way to check the situation is via this old Secunia advisory:
http://secunia.com/advisories/24711/

Hi J-M, Well, then I guess this secunia link is where I'm headed. Thanks again.

Just downloaded NAV 9. Easy install and imported my bookmarks fairly easy. Some of my settings did not follow the NAV 8 import. (Pop up blockers setting, some user name settings) Nothing really important. Read about the weather bug problems, but I just moved it to the bookmark bar and it's out of the way. Have to get use to the mini Browser and I like the link pad. Have not really used it much to really test it. But I am looking forward to it.

One quick question. NAv 8 use to have a email button that would launch my default email program. I don't see that in NAv 9. Am I missing it or is that just removed?

Any info would be great.

Once I play with it, I will post more. But so far so good.

:? I truly am a computer dunce. NS9 is just the browser, i.e. Navigator? No other functions *but* it imported your bookmarks?

I have ancient NS4.7 for emailing, filing emails, addressbook, bookmarks, and was using it to maintain my website until the other day when "it" said it no longer supported it. I just changed my Navigator homepage to yahoo.com for now till I figure out what to do.

Above J-M indicated I should look into Silly Dog (which I will) for my needs since NS9 is a browser only. Did you use your NS8 for email, etc.?

I tried NS6 when it came out and hated the look of it - couldn't read easily nor find the "stuff" I was accustomed to plus it did not import my addressbook nor bookmarks (I can figure out how to save the bookmarks). I hear from others that the look of NS7 is similar and have no idea if it imported all data.

If I switch to Silly Dog, I wish there was some reassurance that email folders, email files, and addressbook will not be lost. I would be so beyond flipped out.

So above explains what I use NS4.7 for and why (it's easy and familiar); however, I use Mozilla and ugh IE for browsers since the ancient NS4.7 doesn't support hardly anything.

I'll keep watching this thread.

form fill

Postby bunnydeausen » Sat 20 Oct, 2007 3:27 am

Hi, can someone help me out. I'm looking for the FORM FILL function, like the one that Netscape 7.2 had. Where can I access it and how do I edit it? Thanks in advance.

Bookmarks

Postby christopher69 » Sat 20 Oct, 2007 9:51 am

Hello,
I was using NAV 8.1 and when I installed it asked to import 8.1's bookmarks. I don't know if it does a auto install from 4.7

I suggest you open your book marks from 4.7 and export them. Then in NAv 9 you import them. That should work.

And yes NAV 9 is just the browser. No email, no composer no anything else. So far so good. Running great. I like the link pad. Very usefull. Just I can't access my thunderbird email program straight from the browser. I hope they come out with a upgrade that will.

Anything else you might need help with, let me know.

If you just want to have a way to launch Thunderbird there is a way to do that.

External Application Buttons (EAB) 0.7.2, Adds a button to launch a program

How to Set Up and Use the External Application Buttons Extension

From the first link look for the Install button to install the addon.
After it is installed read the "How to Setup Up".

Note the new button to launch Thunderbird between History and Comcast.

Hey peeps, not much of an update, but Navigator 9.0.0.1 is out. Probably the equivalent of FF 2.0.0.8.

It's time to change 'Netscape 8' to 'Netscape 9'.

And 'Netscape 6/7' needs some formatting too. :D

Never had the problems run into with this update. So far, two of them surfaced:
1.Loss of most or all saved taked. I finally saved as a bookmark, and was able to retrieve them.
2. Quick Find turns up for no good reason. I am not even sure what it is. Probably Find in this page, which requires typing Cntrl+F. How would I do this accidentally.
By the way, I dont see this in FF2.0.0.8.
By the way, the mystery feature came up when I started typing "dont", but with the apostrophe. It is not a Find in this page with all the options.
And, this Quick Find comes up only when I type an apostrophe. It did right now when I placed an apostrophe, between h and e. Same problem with the forward slash.

ns 9

Postby vipergg » Wed 24 Oct, 2007 4:54 am

I like ns 9 . Have been using it mostly as my main browser . Seems to render pages faster than FF even though it is "supposed" to have the same engine . really no problems at all so far , once in awhile some pages seem to hang a little then complete , other than that i don't see any problems . If you don't want weather bug turn it off .

I rather like NN9 too BUT there's no way it would render pages any more quickly than FF since it's the same thing under the hood. The only way for this to be true would be whatever extensions and themes you have already loaded onto FF which might have a detrimental effect upon its speed. Otherwise, it's really just a subjective feeling that NN is loading more quickly. That certainly hasn't been my experience. They render equally well.

You are absolutely correct. In my case, Firefox has, at least, twice as many add-ons as Navigator9.x, and it takes longer to start. But, I have not noticed any difference in rendering speed.

What about updating the text 'Netscape 8' to 'Netscape 8/9' first. Opinions?
