Thunderbird sending mails twice (or listing on Sent twice)

Postby dougall » Tue 30 Oct, 2007 12:10 pm

Recently migrated all my mails from NS 7.2 to Thunderbird version 2.0.0.6 (20070728). Now every time I send a mail it appears twice on the 'Sent' queue; once from dougalldeejay@netscape.net' ond once from 'Norman <dougalldeejay@netscape.net>'.

I have uninstalled NS 7.2 but no change.

Not sure if they are actually sending twice or what is happening here. I only have one account set up. Any ideas anyone?

@netscape.net server has been discontinued about fifteen months ago. It seems that you are not aware of it.
Typically, @netscape.net mail is being forwarded to @aim.com, where the account should be set up, with same username/password. Sent mail should be in Local Folders, anyway.
So, this is not a NS7.2 problem. A lot of people think that uninstalling/reinstalling the program will fix a Profile issue. The Profile is located in a different location.

1. There is a possibility that the "Sent.msf" file is corrupt. With Thunderbird closed, navigate to your profile Mail folder and Delete the file. Don't be concerned: a .msf file is only an index file, not the emails themselves; the index will be recreated the next time that the mail folder is accessed by TB.
Test.

2. If still a duplicity is indicated: with Thunderbird closed, use an editor (Notepad or WordPad) and Open the Sent folder. If the email appears there twice, then it was sent twice.

Send an email to yourself. Do you get two copies, one 'from' each of the identities?
Speaking of which, although I don't use capability, one can establish multiple identities. From the Account Settings screen, did you click on the Manage Identities button?

3. "Sent mail should be in Local Folders". True only if the Account Settings / "Copies & Folders" is set that way. This is the result when Global Folders was left checked at account creation time. We have several Accounts on the Profile, so each account has its own set of mail folders (Global Folders box was cleared).

This is the correct behavior.

The account uses IMAP which is different from POP3. IMAP stores messages in folders.

When an e-mail is sent via an IMAP account (in the case of using Thunderbird or SeaMonkey), you will see duplicate messages in the Sent folder afterwards.

One message is stored in the actual Sent folder on the netscape.net or aim.com (collectively, AOL) server and the duplicate message is stored on your computer itself. When the message is open, if you go to View/Headers/All, you will notice that the headers are different on each message. The message that is stored on the AOL server (in your Sent folder) will have a reference to an aol.com server in the e-mail headers. The message stored on your computer will not have this information.

Hope this helps.

BTW, if when selecting View/Headers/All, you find the headers take up the entire message window pane, that is due to a long-term bug that has not yet been fixed! Selecting View/Headers/Normal will restore the regular view.

A little aside. Whenever I sent Mail of an AOL IMAP account, it had to be stored in Local Folders. If my selection to store it is in the Sent mail folder of the account, it will never go out.
Well, two or three minutes is too long for me to wait. It goes in the Local Folders, instantly.
And, this has nothing to do with Global Settings which I detest, having 9-10 e-mail accounts.

Well, that's a wupsy for me. I've never used AOL-family accounts and was unaware that it/they are IMAP. My (mis-)assumption ==> wrong path of diagnostics.

Re: Headers All --- One way to view all of them is to then do a Forward. One then can scroll down through everything. When finished, Cancel, and restore the Headers Normal.

If you NS7.2 ( not sure how far back this went) and set up a new account, the second option is for AOL accounts, then below that Netscape Webmail. These accounts have been set up as IMAP, port 143 as far back as I can remember. And, AOL, @aim.com and @netscape.net are one thing. Still IMAP, and Sending ought to be using port 587, to cut down on spam. This way is very slow (authenyication), and since I use my ISP to send that mail much more rapidly, I may have some constraint. Not sure, but AOL takes longer than forever to put mail in its Sent folder. I could use my ISP Sent, or Local Folders to maintain order. I average one e-mail/mo. with my AOL (free) account, and about the same number with the two @aim.com accounts, which replaced my netscape.net accounts.
