Need help with SeaMonkey

Postby ChrisO » Thu 18 Oct, 2007 8:39 pm

I just "upgraded" from Netscape 7.2 to SeaMonkey (on Windows 2000) yesterday and was quite happy with it.

Today, I decided to change the icons and downloaded the Orbit Colors Icon pack (http://iconpacks.mozdev.org/packs/orbit-colours.html). But after "successfully" installing the icons I could not launch the browser! Clicking on the SeaMonkey icon only opened the mail! (as did clicking on the mail icon). So I restored my icons by downloading the uninstall pack (http://iconpacks.mozdev.org/packs/remove-restore.html). The icons reverted back to the originals, but the problem remains: I cannot launch the browser: only the mail opens! Reinstalling SeaMonkey didn't fix it.
Can anyone help?

Chris

P.S.
I posted this message on the Icon web site forum but that forum seems quite deserted.

Chris,
did you uninstall via Add/Remove, and then reinstall SM?
If you did this, and still have a problem, you should, first, give a Feedback to the site. Check the settings in Edit|Preferences|Appearance. What is in Seamonkey startup?
I, finally, reinstalled Seamonkey, which was giving me some odd problems, by creating a new profile. Be patient, though. I suffered for a couple of weeks, and then reinstalled SM after an absence of nearly six weeks. I don't want to tempt fate, trying to reproduce your problem.

Fulvio,

Thanks for responding.

I didn't use Add/Remove. I just used the SM .exe file I keep on my desktop.
I was thinking about reinstalling SM via Add/Remove (since, as far as I understand
that would be a "cleaner" install), but then this morning I discovered that I can still
open a SM browser window by clicking on a web site link in an email (the Mail part
of SM works fine).

So, actually, I can launch the browser but only in this roundabout way, via the SM mail.

As to the Edit|Preferences|Appearance. Originally the Navigator box was checked.
Then I played with different settings but that didn't make any difference. The current setting is Mail & Newsgroups.

I will probably use Add/Remove to reinstall SM. In that case I would "lose" the profile?
(I did make a copy).

It is wise of you to back up the profile. As for losing it, it is the first question everyone asks. No, you don't. SM, like earlier programs of this kind is made up of three components:
1.The program which is, mostly, but not completely removed on uninstalling. The plugins folder remains for future use. So, nothing to be afraid, using the Add/Remove.
2. The GRE folder which I have no clue where it is now. Someone else may give you some idea. The GRE folder should be removed on uninstalling. There is a Setup GRE in the program.
3. The profile is left untouched.

Installing on top, will replace existing files/folders, but will not touch leftovers which are not present in a good installation. So, something from your previous download made have remained in the program or the profile. Uninstalling the program via Add/Remove, and, then reinstalling it, should remove part of the mystery.

Well, I finally managed to fix the problem by doing a "clean" reinstall with a new profile (I used Ramona's excellent posting on a clean install and creating a new profile - thanks Ramona).

I still have two, unrelated questions (in case anyone is still looking at this post).

1. Sorry if this is trivial, but how does one rearrange the icons in the SM toolbar.
Specifically, I'd like to move the "Bookmarks" button to the right end.

2. When I open a web link in an email (pop3 client in SM) it always opens in a new window
which I don't want. Can this be fixed somehow? In NS 7.2 this was only happening when I right clicked on a link and used the "Open Link in New Window" option from the scroll down menu.

As for question #2, check Prefs|Navigator|Tabbed browsing|Link open behavior|Select current tab/window. I, actually, like the way it comes up with a new tab. Since I use four Tabs, I can right click and close the new tab, and leave the existing tabs alone, but it is up to you.
As for question 1, I don't know, but what is the difference between the Bookmarks button in the Personal Toolbar, and the Bookmarks button on the Main (Top) toolbar. In other words, why two buttons? But, I have no idea what to go after to make such changes (I did check some files).
