daylight saving starts tomorrow (28 Oct) in Australia

Just a gentle reminder, daylight saving starts tomorrow morning at 2am in New South Wales, ACT, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. The clock will move forward to 3am at 2am.

Last December, [sdt=12419]Western Australia started a three-year trial of daylight saving[/sdt]. Some liked daylight saving, some didn't. In the 31 years prior to last year, WA had rejected daylight saving in three referendums. Tomorrow will be the second year of daylight saving trial for WA, and starting the same as most of the countries.

Queensland and Northern Territory are not observing daylight saving. (Tasmania has started ahead of rest of the country.)

The daylight saving should end on 30th March 2008, however, the State Government is thinking about extend it until April (same as Tasmania).

Who knows, after another three referendums or so people will realise that no one wants this daylight savings garbage.

Queensland and Northern Territory are not observing daylight saving.

Perhaps I ought to consider moving!

Here in the U.S., we would have changed the clocks back yesterday morning, however due to a change mandated by the Congress and signed into law, in 2007, they extended DST to see if it saves energy. If it does not have the desired effect, then it was to go back to the timeframe used during 2006. We now will turn the clocks back one hour this coming Sunday morning (November 4).

I saw something online that indicated only 1% was saved because of the change made this year, so I have a feeling that the period will be changed back to what it was in 2006, at some point.

What I believe is that not just energy saving issue, the main reason is the commercial interests which Government afraid to emphasise the main reason publicly.

Many cities run extended timetable during Daylight Saving period. More frequent public transport at late hours and some businesses open late during Daylight Saving.

Take Sydney's Bondi (beach) area for example. Business owners there want Daylight Saving starts a week earlier and finish one week later for one simple reason... when it is bright outside, more people staying outside or going out.

Most states and provinces in the United States and Canada should have the daylight saving time ending this weekend at 2am 4th November 2007.

If you are using Mac OS x 10.4.5 or later, you should be all set with the new government change.
:panther: If you are still using Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, you can upgrade to 10.3.9 and install Daylight Saving Time Update.

For more detail, please refer to About Daylight Saving Time changes in 2007 article.

Expert says that daylight saving damages our body (on Perth's Today Tonight).

Windows Vista informed me of some fantastic news:-

My sincere condolences go to those people living in states where daylight saving does not end until April.

Sorry, but the United States has beat you since, in 2008, we got off DST on the March 9.

A nice link (U.S. Naval Observatory) that I just found says:

Starting in 2007, daylight time begins in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. On the second Sunday in March, clocks are set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time. On the first Sunday in November, clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local daylight time, which becomes 1:00 a.m. local standard time. These dates were established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Pub. L. no. 109-58, 119 Stat 594 (2005).

Not all places in the U.S. observe daylight time. In particular, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not use it. Indiana adopted its use beginning in 2006.

* In 2006, daylight time begins on April 2 and ends on October 29.
* In 2007, daylight time begins on March 11 and ends on November 4. [New law goes into effect.]
* In 2008, daylight time begins on March 9 and ends on November 2.
* In 2009, daylight time begins on March 8 and ends on November 1.

Many other countries observe some form of "summer time", but they do not necessarily change their clocks on the same dates as the U.S.

Daylight time and time zones in the U.S. are defined in the U.S. Code, Title 15, Chapter 6, Subchapter IX - Standard Time.

I have a feeling that the Government was lobbied by business owners together with an example from the States.

australia.gov.au pointed out that Daylight Saving in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia joining Tasmania end Daylight Saving on the first Sunday of April. And from October 2008, Daylight Saving on those states will start earlier than previously, first Sunday instead of last Sunday in October.

(For those not sure what I was referring to, small business owners like daylight saving as more people staying outside and hence hopefully visiting their shops. Energy saving is merely an excuse in my opinion.)

Thanks profman for the information about Daylight Saving in the States.

Some excellent news for all those living in Western Australia. Just twenty two minutes ago DST finished. Good riddance I say!

Lucky you.

I don't mind daylight saving, but I really don't see the point to extend the daylight saving.

And Sydney has been in some sort of chaos this time. Take a look at this news clip:

daylight saving confusing (7News, 30th March 2008) (H.264 video)

I am glad to report that all my Macs (in Leopard and Tiger) handle the extended daylight saving correctly.

Daylight Saving will end in a few hours time today (3am 6th April, 2008) in all remaining states in Australia for real this time.

It was a stupid confusion last Sunday.
