"XPicleanup.exe" Error in Netscape Navigator9 with

Postby PY2000 » Sun 18 Nov, 2007 12:26 am

Hello: Since, I've been having nothing but problems with Netscape Navigator 9, which is annoying as it's my preferred browser.

The issue is: Every time I close the browser and attempt to re-open it, I receive the following error message "the program must close to allow a previous installation attempt to complete. Please restart" followed by my agreeing to the "OK" button which tells me something entitled "xpicleanup.exe" needs to run.

After doing this, the browser simply won't open again until I re-install it, which is unacceptable.

Hopefully, someone here will be able to assist me in getting NN9 back to normal. Please, kindly advise. Thank you.

It is a problem encountered a way back in Firefox. I don't know if the suggested fix will work for you. Make sure that you look in this path: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator.
I never had this problem, either with Navig.9 or Firefox. If no go, do a Search for the bad file. I got a lot of hits, so you are not the only one.
Note: I don't have such file in either Navig.9 nor Firefox.
I suggest that you uninstall the program, and delete any remaining file, before reinstalling. Or, just delete the file if you find it.

Re: Response

Postby PY2000 » Sun 18 Nov, 2007 11:21 pm

Hi Fulvio, Thank you so much for the response, much appreciated. Unfortunately, what you suggested doesn't work and I simply have no idea how to correct the issue. I've notice in Vista there is also something entitled "Shadow Copy" where there are listed 3 copies of the Netscape file, but no manner of deleting such files, at least that I've been able to locate. It seems, each time I un-install Netscape, it backs-up the copy, but I'm not certain. I've e-mailed Netscape, but have had no response. If, you have any other suggestions, I would certainly appreciate them, as this is ridiculous having to re-install each time I wish to use my browser. Again, thank you for your courtesy! Best, PY2000

Following some menu paths at Microsoft, concerning Vista Shadow Copy ---
Discussion
Control
My quick take is that this is an enhancement of the XP System Restore functionality.

I did a Google search for [ "xpicleanup.exe" ] and got about 690 hits. I found the same item that Fulvio did. I don't have Vista to work with.

Since XpiCleanUp appears to be a "housekeeping" function that runs at the end of an installation, I suspect that there is some change in Vista (from XP) that is throwing the process off track. If you want to experiment a bit more with this, after doing an uninstall of NS, look to see if there is a residual xpicleanup.exe somewhere. Then ensure that you have full Administrative privileges for the reinstall. If that doesn't work, then I dunno.

Paul,
do you have a
xpicleanup.exe
file? As you may have gathered, I have every program which is in any way related to NS, Seamonkey, and you name it. Only two programs have that file, and both are unzipped programs. The file does not have and icon.
The two programs are Kompozer0.7, and Seamonkey2.0a1 nightly. Neither program seems to be affected by the presence of the file.
It, definitely, seems to be a housekeeping file, which is created during the installation of an add-on or theme (as .xpi files). My suggestion is try to open the program in Safe Mode.
May be there had been some attempt to install an add-on, which never was completed.

Paul, I have experience the same problem. What I had to do was uninstall Netscape and Mozilla Firefox (Only if you have it installed.) Then I had to go into C:\Program Files and delete all of the files associated with both of them. Then reboot, and install it.

*Note, I had to download the setup.exe files and then disconnect my internet connection to install them.

I need to clarify a couple of things
- I'm not having any problems
- I have only the 3 Mozilla programs shown below; no Netscape, no SeaMonkey, no xxx
My system has extant 3 copies of xpicleanup.exe; one each in
C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox - this is FF 1.5
C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Firefox2 - this is FF 2.0
C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Thunderbird - this is TB 2.0
(Note that I do a Custom installation and use a non-standard folders tree.)
These three files are different sizes; their date/time stamps match the rest of the files in their respective folders.
One last note - I always do an uninstall of an 'old' release, then an install of the 'new' one. I think that this harks back to the old NS days (probably 4.x, possibly 7.1).

1. I have no problem.
2. The Search dog is fired. I do have the file in all my programs, a total of ten, but that dog finds the file in only three of them. I had to visit each program to see that the file was there.
The size was 76 +/- 10Kb.
I may or may not do Custom Install, and may or may not use non-standard folders trees.
Usually, I uninstall the old release, and, of course, each program uses its own profile. I never had problems with updates, but have hearc enough from other people to be cautious.

This is completely off of topic, but how do I create user profiles in Thunderbird 2.0.0.9?

Open a new topic if this not working. It is done the same way as it has been done for NS, Mozilla, etc. http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/NS7newprofile.html

Your problem probably stems from the fact that there is not a "Profile Manager"-enabled shortcut created during TB installation.
1. Locate one of your TB shortcuts, and Copy it. Rename it as desired; I call mine Profile Manager, to parallel the shortcut names used in Firefox.
2. Right-click > Properties.
3. Modify the Target value by adding after the [...\thunderbird.exe" ] the following:
-ProfileManager
that is, [.exe" -ProfileManager] (space, then the hyphen, etc.; do not add another double-quote)
4. Click OK, and the shortcut is ready to use.
Note that the syntax is identical that used by Firefox's profile manager shortcut.

It did not work. *Probably because I am using Thunderbird Portable.
