Junk mail controls stink

Postby Fulvio » Thu 06 Dec, 2007 1:34 pm

I am very confident in my ISP Spam Controls. I got no more than 50 spam e-mail in six accounts over the past 2-3 years. And, I report all spam to my ISP. I, never, got the same type of e-mail twice.
But, so I hardly need junk controls. But, they must be there by default. This morning I found two e-mails sent to Trash, as I have it configured. One in Thunderbird, and different one in SeaMonkey. I have been getting the same bulletin, from TB) for over a year with incident. In fact, I had gotten a bulletin a couple of days before. As for SM, where the settings are identical the target was an e-mail from a friend, who was answering to a question of mine.
I have had TB2.0.0.9 and SM1.1.7 since they came out. What are they seeing? Both e-mails, from different accounts had a setting of "move new message". What does it mean? Would all new messages be moved?
Of course, I unchecked the box. In fact, I unchecked everything about Junk Control. I don't nee any help. I know when some slips through e-mail.

Is that "move new message", or "Move new junk messages"? (Note the junk.)
I presume that this is the Junk Settings on the account.
What are the other settings (check boxes)?
- Enable adaptive ...
- Do not mark ... if the sender is in: [______]
- Trust ... set by: [______]
What are the settings on other accounts?

And on Tools | Options | Privacy | Junk, are you logging? The log could give you a clue as to what the triggering action is.

Perchance do you have any message Filter also defined - that could have been the culprit? Any logging here? (Filters are stored in "msgFilterRules.dat" in the mail account's folder.)

Mozillazine has articles:
1. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Filters_(Thunderbird)
--> CAUTION: The (Thunderbird) is part of the URL. BBCode has a bug that strips parenthesized data.
2. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls . This has a lot of tweaks and considerations.

I had the first two entries checked, and none of the other. And, yes, The entry was "move new junk mail messages". to the Trash folder is the account in question. I have six account, and for some reason I did not have the ""move new junk mail messages" checked in four of them. Now, none of them are checked. One account had a filter which never worked. I had been getting a number of messages with no text. So, I created a filter with nothing written on it.
This account was not the one which gave me problems.
I had not even noticed the entry which would cause messages to be marked as Junk.
I have never found a real spam message marked Junk, while these two had been coming to me in the past with no problem. Ironically, I had gotten back to back (but hours apart) two e-mails. One was marked Junk, while the other was not. I will have to see if there are differences, or was this a case of temporary insanity.
I will read the links, to see if there is any clue. Thanks.
