7.2 Netscape - having trouble sending mail

Postby linda57 » Wed 09 Jan, 2008 10:08 pm

I am on Comcast but use Netscape 7.2 to read my mail.
I can no longer send mail. I keep getting an error.
It says, "Connected to smtp.comcast.net" but it never sends.
Then when I click on cancel it says,
"Sending of message failed. Please verify that your Mail & Newsgroups account
settings are correct and try again."

I put all my sent files into another folder but that didn't help.
What else can I try?
All the settings seem to be correct and what they've always been.
I do have a LOT of folders and over 17,000 emails in my Inbox.
Does it just quit working when it gets "filled up"?
Can I download Netscape 9.0...would that help?
(would I loose anything if I did that?)

How long have you been with Comcast, and used Netscape? Comcast has been using authentication to send mail, i.e. you have to enter your username/password in the settings, and use port 587. Comcast FAQs are pathetic, and, do not address Netscape as a mail client (I may be mistaken, but nothing like that came up). Look at their instructions for Outlook Express.
Check you outgoing mail (SMTP) settings, and change if necessary. The settings for your account should point to that SMTP. And, you can use only that username to send mail. Another username would require a separate SMTP.
You say that you have a lot of folders, which is good, but somehow you have 17,000 e-mails in your Inbox. Why? Do you compact your folders? It depends on how the total size of your Inbox file on the hard drive. Anything approaching 1 GB is dangerous, beside being messy.
But you are mixing Sent with Inbox, which are entirely different, but large files would cause the the Mail to quit working. But, as I explained above, I don't think that it is the problem.

You would lose nothing, because the two programs are independent....and Netscape 9.0 has no Mail.

7.2 Netscape and Comcast

Postby linda57 » Thu 10 Jan, 2008 2:02 pm

I've been using this combo for years!
I've fixed glitches before but nothing now is working.
As I said...my settings are what they have always been.
And nowhere does it say to use port 587.
I can't find where the username/password setting is on comcast.
But my username/password setting is the same it's always been on Netscape under Mail and Newsgroup account settings.
Server name is mail.comcast.net and DEFAULT port is 995.
Outgoing server name is smtp.comcast.net and default port is 25.
user name is linda57
I have been compacting the folders but now it asks me to do that every time which must mean they are too full...so now what?
I'm not mixing sent with Inbox. I moved my sent emails because before when I deleted some, it worked again so I just took them all out and moved them but that didn't work.
I have no idea how to check to see how big my Inbox is in MB, etc.

Fulvio's advice is on target. Look at the Comcast Help page he gave the link to, specifically item number 14 (but starting with #8).

My ISP notified its users last year that they were implementing secure email account settings; but the old settings continued to be usable for some time. (I haven't tested the old default settings so I don't know if they have been disabled yet.) Therefore, since Comcast instructions are for different ports, you should make the changes indicated.

Does the compacting process finish, or do you abort Netscape before the process has completed?

You have to do this in Explorer (don't confuse this with Internet Explorer). Each NS mail folder is a disk file; these are located within the account profile, which normally is hidden. See this item for how to locate the profile. Don't let the title disturb you - as noted within the article the instructions are valid for Netscape also.

Once you get to these mail files, do you see any 'funny-named' ones (not including those with suffixes of '.msf')?

Linda, you can find the size of your files/folders in Explorer, in your profile|xxxxx.slt|Mail|accountname|Inbox or Sent. Just click on the file, and it should show up on the left side of the page (or right click|Properties).
The link for setup in Outlook Express says that you need authentication to send messages, requiring some changes in your set up. You will need port 587 to send, although as Paul said, it may not be necessary. I have two relatives in Michigan and Maine who use Comcast, but they don't use Netscape.
FYI, authentication has become very popular with some ISPs, purportedly to prevent Spam. Of course, Spam users can, easily get around this, but users are confused.

Netscape 7.2 ..trouble with email

Postby tatt00 » Thu 06 Nov, 2008 7:54 pm

I probably missed this but.... Switched over to AT&T DSL and now mail won't send from Netscape 7.2. I have updated DNS settings as AT&T switched servers. All dialog boxes are filled in correctly. Mail comes in but none is sent. Is this an issue with AT&T (U-verse)? Do I need to register info with them or change a port number? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....Mark

Hello Mark, welcome to the forum.

"I have updated DNS settings as AT&T switched servers."
- Are these DNS settings within Netscape? I would let them default. The DSL modem should pick up the correct settings.
- The ATT info that I know of is here.

I have the 'plain' DSL, not the U-verse; does this make a difference in the mail settings?.

It is possible that your Passwords information still has an obsolete SMTP entry. Delete any/all SMTP lines. The first mail send should then request your password again.

"All dialog boxes are filled in correctly. ... Do I need to ... change a port number?"
- For your reference, my SMTP definition is like this:
-- Server Name: smtp.att.yahoo.com Port: 465 Default: 465
-- [checked] Use name and password
-- User Name: my-id@sbcglobal.net
-- Use secure connection - SSL is checked

And my Password lines are like these:
- mailbox://my-id%40sbcglobal.net@pop.att.yahoo.com PaulD%40sbcglobal%2Enet
- smtp://my-id%40sbcglobal.net@smtp.att.yahoo.com <>
-- (Note: these two lines above show as links in this forum because of their syntax. They aren't, so don't bother to click on them.)
And when I click on Show Passwords, both are the same, which is the account password that is used in the DSL Homeportal.

Paul suggestion should be right on. I just googled:ATT mail settings, and came with this
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1b1) Gecko/20081007 Firefox/3.1b1

...trouble sending email from Netscape 7.2

Postby tatt00 » Fri 07 Nov, 2008 11:15 pm

Thanks for your quick responses. Found and changed as necessary all indicated. Tried a test message and got: " An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: From: address not verified; see
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/o ... rm-07.html. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again."

Well, verfied email address is correct in Mail preference, tried again...same response. Went to the link given and my first question is "What does Yahoo have to do with this?" Any ideas?

Yahoo? I dunno. Some kind of marketing arrangement between Yahoo and SBC/ATT. In any case, it is part of the URL.

Please note that my ISP is SBCGLOBAL. What is yours?
My mail (POP and SMTP) addresses used-to be [pop/smtp].sbcglobal.yahoo.com. They changed from sbcglobal to att about a year ago.
Caution: Note that your email address is .net, while the server is .com.
Verify that your address is complete: your-user-id@your-ISP.net .
If you have no sub-accounts then this will match what you have defined in your DSL modem.
If you are using a sub-account then this will match the sub-account name.
