You probably need re-writable media (DVD+RW etc). Or you can just get some other software to burn stuff to DVDs. I like Deepburner, there's a free version available. The premium version is well worth the cost though. :)

If you haven't already, read Start > All Programs > Sonic > DLA > DLA Help. Also look at the Readme.txt for other considerations and possible products' interactions.

It says that the CD/DVD must first be initialized (formatted), just like magnetic media (disk, diskette) do.

We have DLA (also 5.2.0) on our computers, but haven't used it. Instead we use the (Sonic-supplied) IBM RecordNow, which came pre-installed.

Sonic has a page that has some Q&A's. There is no indication that I can find that the (-R) media are unacceptable.

You say that you are "trying to save pics on a dvd-r". Two questions about your computer:
1. Can you verify that the optical drive that you have can record on DVD? Some drives are Combo drives, that only read DVDs, and read and write CDs.
2. It is possible, although unlikely, that your drive is limited to the DVD+ (not DVD-) media.
To learn more than you ever wanted to know about DVD, see here.

You also ask "what kind of cds do i need?" The answer is: whatever the drive will support. Again, there are CD- and CD+ media. For CD-related info, see here.
