Safari 3.1 released

Apple today released Safari 3.1. Apple claims Safari 3.1 is the world’s fastest web browser for Mac and Windows PCs. In addition to loading web pages 1.9 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and 1.7 times faster than FireFox 2, Safari 3.1 runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers.

Safari is available for free download for Mac OS X and Windows.

Safari 3.1 is the first browser to support the new video and audio tags in HTML 5 and the first to support CSS Animations. Safari also supports CSS Web Fonts, giving designers limitless choices of fonts to create stunning new web sites.

Apple first released Safari 3 (public beta) to Windows users in June last year.

Safari 3.1 can be downloaded from http://www.apple.com/safari/ . The system requirement: Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later, or Windows XP or Vista with 256MB RAM or more on a 500 MHz or faster CPU.

Will see if it remembers the passwords. It had not in 3.04. It does! It may have been due to my settings with Ccleaner.
A puzzling thing happens at http://www.apple.com/itunes/ When I try to play what it shows in the center screen, like Ugly Betty, etc. the screen go black, and nothing happens. However the items on the right link up to iTunes. Is this a Windows only problem?

Same here. But something is happening because the icon in taskbar shows network/internet traffic.
Otherwise I am very pleased with the progress of Safari.

Questions:

- Can Safari be easily removed?

- Does it have anything similar to ad-block?

- Will McAfee SiteAdvisor work with it?

- Besides speed of loading, what are its strong points that might entice a FF user to try it out?

As far as I know it is as uninstallable as anything else. However, add-ons which are used in Firefox, do not apply to Safari. That's not surprising, as add-ons are made, specifically to enhance Firefox, and close relatives.
Benefits? I don't know enough about Safari to pass judgment. If Quicktime is used at some sites, Safari is, definitely superior.

Can you try Safari even if you don't use a Mac?

I have some catching up to do, I'm still using flipping Windows XP and OE 6.0 and I'm not very happy with either.
I've had so many errors lately.

My ISP is slow and I'm on cable, I cleaned my PC with CCleaner, defragged, and my computer has

Free 50.6GB
Cap 74.4Gb

Lorraine,
I would not trade WinXP for Vista, if they paid me. My hard drive is a lot like yours, except that I my used/free ratio is reversed. I don't use OE6.0, but it is irrelevant, since Safari is a browser only. Refer to Antony's post, which includes a download link. Select the correct OS. Antony has, also, listed the requirements:

I am not sure why I would be interested in Safari but...

In a review at PCMag or PCWorld, I was left with the impression that if I got Safari for Windows, I would get iTunes and Quicktime with it.

I have zero interest in iTunes and Quicktime.

So, is this thing correct?

I was under a similar impression and stopped short of installing it for that reason. I had heard that one could opt out during the installation but that folks who opted out, still received iTunes and Quicktime. So, perhaps we both misunderstood what was said. I'll be interested in hearing this clarified.

You can download Safari either packaged with iTunes and Quicktime or you can just download the browser.

I believe you are correct, now that I've done a bit more research. Looking at the reviews relating to its memory usage and its uncustomizable interface, I think I'll forget about installing it.

Many people simply install it because they like the way it looks, however you can get a Safari like theme fore Fifefox that makes FF look like Safari.

PC Magazine awarded Safari 3.1 for Windows four (out of five) stars.

Michael Muchmore (pcmag.com) indicates that in addition to being able to resize its window from any edge, “a slew of new improvements, some unique features, impressive speed, and future-looking standards support makes it a worthy browsing partner.â€

It seems that Apple goofed in Safari's EULA - it's against the license terms to install it on a non-Apple-branded PC.

This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.
