Welcome to the modern technology of meteorology!

Har-de-har.

It's been raining on and off since yesterday afternoon. I get to drive in it. Yay for being a learner driver

For those who live in Australia, there's a good news: A $30 million, four-year project to create Australia's biggest weather supercomputer is underway for the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and Australian National University (ANU).

The BOM machine will have the capacity to make about 1.5 trillion complex weather calculations a second as it crunches through weather data from around the country.

(...)

The ANU machine, which will run at 140 teraflops per second, will be among the world's top 30 high performance computing systems.

We are getting cold here.

For the last few days, Sydney has had pretty bad weather. During the day, you can expect quite a few heavy showers and even some sun in between.

The weather has been pretty bad for southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. Here's the news report (video in H.264).

Ever wonder so many people coughing?

We had nice and cool day on Friday, followed by very hot Saturday and Sunday (temperature in 30s), and windy and raining on Monday.

Maui

Postby James » Thu 17 Sep, 2009 1:14 am

My wife are here in Maui (Kaanapali) for ten days. The weather is just beautiful: sunny days... warm nights. We hang about the pool, read books we've sworn we would read but never got around to it... and take little day trips to Lahaina, Nipili and Hana. Had quite an adventure trying to get "the best banana bread on the planet" driving along a one lane road hugging the side of a cliff for two miles. Had I known this, I NEVER would have taken the risk. But once I started... it was impossible to turn back. Let's just say it was a Hail Mary drive like no other.

To be honest, most of us aren't really looking forward to summer. The scotching temperature and serious bush fire are expected.

We had unusual heavy rainfall few months back, and a very dry summer is predicted... a perfect condition for bush fires. The bush fire warning is out already for the season.

Richard, I moved! I no longer live right on the lake, I live about a mile away! It's still getting really cold, it's 33F here right now.

John, seriously, does that mile make a big difference? If you have a ridge in there, or significant woods, it could make a huge difference. We watch storm patterns in the Northwest New Jersey Highlands and the Ridge and Valley regions to see about going snow-shoeing. Our ridges are generally no more than a mile at the base; we can get 6"-8" on the western side, and 2"-3" on the eastern side of the same ridge. The former, you snow-shoe. The latter, you hike.

Red sky day today.

Image

We got up in severe dust storm storm (the sky is still reddish at time of posting).
The result of dust storm... very low visibility in Sydney today, fire alarms in many buildings were set...

Finally, some Spring temperature has arrived.
Image

It has been raining and cold last week, felt like we were back to winter.

The snowing resort areas even had some unexpected snow...
