Spybot and ada-ware?

Postby keith » Sun 15 Jun, 2008 10:17 pm

Hey all. Long time no talk. Heres my situation. Im on my brothers computer. Its got Windows XP on it, and its slow and trashed to the point i can hardly get on here to type this. The reason for this is probly because his anti-virus expired and he never renewed it, lus theres probly lots of other bad stuff on it. spam, viruses, who knows what else. I have decided, since its in such rough shape, to back up my files onto a flashdrive, and format it, to0 start fresh. I used to run spybot and ad-aware on my computers. Are thos still available? if so, are they the ones to use? or should i be using something else now? Along with a new anti-virus program, i wasnt something that will have the same affect, and will get rid of all that stuff so this problem doesnt occure. Suggestions as to what to use would be very helpful, and much appreciated. Thanks!

Keith.

Hello Keith,

Nice to see you back.

Probably you know that I am a Mac user, I may not give you the best advise. However, I would recommend AVG Free Anti-Virus for the protection. (I used it in my Windows XP under Parallels Desktop, and find it quite well.)

I don't have much idea for speeding up your Windows and protection against spyware, I am sure other members can help you better.

Hi Keith

I use Antivir which is free and can be found here:

http://www.free-av.com/

This will take care of your virus and malware problems. As for a firewall, if you don't like the Windows firewall (and few do), you can try Sunbelt's Kerio which starts with the Pro version for a thirty day trial and automatically reverts to their free version. It's a good deal found here:

http://www.download.com/Sunbelt-Kerio-P ... 87067.html

Spybot is a good way to go for the spyware.

Keith-

I am currently using the Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and, AVG 8 Free A/V only on two XP machines, and Avast A/V/ only on two Vista machines.

I ditched Ad-Aware and Spybot.

Keith-

I don't believe we've ever been formal introduced. Anyways, I use avast! Home edition (http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and A-Aware 2007. So far this is the best program couple I have ever used. It seems to take care of all of my problems, and they work seamlessly together.

Thanks, I feel privileged. It's nice to know that some people can take a fourteen year old seriously.

Haha, cool. It really does mean a lot to me, most people think when I give them tech. advice that it's a load of sh#t. But I can assure you, I usually know what I am talking about as Richard stated.
