The PlayStation 3 is 40GB model (the only one model that is available in Australia), it does not play PS2 games (okay that's the side point). The internal HDD is user upgradeable and won't void the warranty.
According to official document, the internal HDD is 2.5-inch SATA HDD. Also from many third party websites, the included HDD is 5400 rpm.
I intend to put some music and photos into the PS3 machine (since it is intended as a media centre more than a game machine), and it is likely that I will buy a few cheap games from PlayStation Store (part of PlayStation Network). And I might install an operating system for PS3 (Other OS, PlayStation 3 Open Platform) sometime in the future.
In short, I have a feeling that 40GB HDD space is not enough.
Do you think that I shall get a new HDD now (before importing music/photos, buying games...) to save the trouble in the future? Or wait until I ran out of HDD space?
Also, in PlayStation's forum, hotpocketdeath made a good comparison on 5400rpm vs 7200rpm HDDs for PS3, 7200rpm HDD provides about 10% improvement in speed but also increases the temperature by a few degrees. I am not sure if there is any other (negative) impact on 7200rpm HDD instead of 5400rpm one.
Shall I get a 7200rpm HDD instead of 5400rpm HDD? Or stay safe with 5400rpm?
