Folders In 7.2 Browser Suddenly Empty - MSFs Are Fine

Postby CoolCat » Mon 15 Sep, 2008 10:46 pm

I've been using 7.2 for years for email and prefer it and want to continue using it.

From time to time, I rename the current Inbox.msf of my most frequently used email account as InboxYEARMODAY.msf.

That way, the folder Name window (on the left) displays the names of my old backed up MSF files, as well as mail that goes automatically to Inbox.msf.

The folder Name window also displays other accounts I have set to download to this browser, with each of their msf files (Inbox.msf, Sent.msf, Drafts.msf, etc.).

Tonight, everything in the Name window disappeared. I was prompted to go through Profile Manager, but I kept getting an error message that the default folder was in use and to either create a new one or rename it (or delete it).

I can't remember how to get the browser to display MSFs again. I thought it would do that automatically by looking at the mozilla/profiles/default/etc. path.

I uninstalled and reinstalled 7.2 a few times.

Thanks for any help.

Actually everything disappeared

OP here, adding to my original post.

Forgot to mention that everything disappeared: the MSF names in the Name window as well as display of all the mail headers in the main mail window.

How can I get it to start looking at and displaying the MSF files again? They're in the same place they were before they disappeared. I just can't remember how to get the browser to retrieve and display them.

Mission Accomplished... like this

Closed Netscape.

Backed up the Mail folder and moved it out of the .slt folder. (Wrote down the exact path to the original proper location.) Renamed all the msf files with the to and from dates of the messages they contain, so there were no plain Inbox.msf, Draft.msf, Sent.msf... files in the Mail folder at all.

Rebuilt the email accounts in Netscape.

Closed Netscape again.

Moved the Mail folder back into the slt folder.

Opened Netscape. Everything was restored. And now I have a fresh, empty inbox for the first time in months.

I did not see your posts, but it appeares that you solved your problem, although I don't quite understand how.
The .msf files are built according to the equivalent files without extention, and they can become corrupted. The solution is very simple. Close your program, and
delete you .msf file(s). Renaming them will accomplish the same, but it is not a recommended method. When you reopen your program, new .msf file(s) have been rebuilt.
Since your problems are in the profile, uninstalling/reinstalling the program accomplishes nothing. So, you spent a lot of time doing unnecessary things. You would have had a new Inbox by simply renaming the past Inbox file, not the .msf file.
