Thunderbird cannot open nessages as file on desktop

Postby vsxdoc » Tue 12 Aug, 2008 12:47 pm

When I save a message as a file on desktop on new machine...icon correctly appears..When I click to open it is blank. If I copy to memory stick and paste to older machine desktop , it opens up properly in Netscape. Do I need to download Netscape7.2 (it is present in old machine) into my new machine to open thunderbird message that I saved as a file on new desktop? Is there any other way to open thunderbird E Mail which I saved as a file on my new desktop?
Thank you...vsxdoc
Four hours later
I decided to download complete Netscape 7.2 to see if I was successful in opening T Bird files
on my dessk top...did not work..same blank page. What could be different ? What else can I do..As best as I can determine all options and settings are identical between machines...except that older machine has both 7.0 and 7.2 netscape...Help!! VSXDOC

I can't test your situation as I have only one operational computer, but, I can come up with some questiona for you.
1.Does the old computer have an installed Thunderbird?
2. Is Thunderbird default in the new computer?
3. Which file format is your saved file? What type of icon?

In my case the icon looks like an envelope, and it is an .eml file. When I open it it looks, exactly, like the e-mail in the open mail program. Thunderbird2.0.0.16 is my default mail program.
I don't know why you have a blank e-mail in the new computer. My saved e-mail shows in its Properties that it is a 12 Kb file, and it is described an Internet e-mail file.. Any size larger than 2Kb for yours? There is no reason to install anything to open your message.

Thanks for your response...The desktop saved icon is not an envelope ...it is a blue thunderbird.
The properties in all the icons all show content ..the contents are there...as proved if I copy to my older computer...also I use the same T Bird
defaults 2.0.0.0.16...the same as you do it seems...And as I added to above posting, I downloaded Netscape 7.2 to my new machine rebooted, tried another file transfer to desktop as a new message, with the same result ...a beautiful blue T Bird icon with content..and opens blank..
All attachments in word, pdf and excel all load properly to my desktop and can be opened ..only T Bird has this problem... What to do?

Just discovered that I can open the icon contents properly by using OPEN SAVED MESSAGE under the File Menu....but still blank when I click on it...Oh well , half a loaf is better than none
and maybe we should not pursue it....just so frustrating!

Interestingly. I could care less if a shortcut works, and it does. The opposite is true for you.
But, is this not the case all the time? As for the lack of response with NS7.2, I would not expect it to work, if TB is your default. You click on the shortcut, and TB should open, not NS7.2. If you right click on the icon, and select Open with, what do you see? You should select anything you want, including NS7.2, I think. My right click|open with menu does not include NS, which is not on my computer. However, the file opens, nicely, with Seamonkey, which is NS7.2 successor, if I select it from Other programs. The saved e-mail does not open in mail, but rather, it seems, with the browser.
